Hey just got a quote from Progressive for my 78 FJ40 and it seemed a bit high for comprehensive/collision coverage.

$500 deductible and they are wanting $436 per 6 months of coverage.

This is my first classic car experience with my insurance company. My daily driver is 4WD and at least $150 less per 6 months. Is progressive off base with this quote?

Any recommendations?

Try Haggerty or American Collectors for cheaper rates. I am still up in the air about who to go with. You might also bump up your deductible on your FJ40 to lower your premiums.

I have State Farm for all my insurance (DD, FJ40, renters, and umbrella). My premium (I believe this is before the multiline discounts) for an agreed value of $10k is $107 per 6 months. That with a $250 deductible for collision and comprehensive.

I dont know. Im doing the same thing and I got a quote similar but a little less a month from esurance. I am trying to get a quote from Grundy classic car insurance and they quoted me so far $350 a year. My grandpa likes hagerty insurance. He pays about $100 a year for his 50 ford pickup. But it my not provide the coverage your looking for.

They key information not provided is how much coverage is it. You need to know up to what value will the replace. A 1978 land cruiser could be worth $500 or $25,000 and the amount you should pay will also be very different.

why do you need classic car insurance

when I lived in Nebraska, I had all our vehicles, regardless of age on the same policy - the oldest is 50 :hillbilly:

I now have a stated-value policy for the 40, with a regular insurer

Progressive, in my experience (shopping around every some two years or so), tends to be on the expensive side

Pay for the what you get

This is a tough one,
I'm a licensed agent and write for about 10 companies including Progressive. Each company has so many different discounts that it is hard to say who has the best price. Progressive here in Utah even has an alcohol free discount. Also the amount of coverage makes a big difference. Your quote could be for 500,000 dollar limits and then you could get a quote for state minimums at 25,000.

The key is to find a company that insures your car the way you drive it. Daily driver I would suggest going with a standard company like Progressive, State Farm, Auto-Owners ect. These seem to provide the coverages for someone who uses their vehicle everyday. Some will even allow you to rate it as a "Classic" assuming you use it less than a normal car.

Hagerty or some of the other specialty insurance companies can be less, but they often times come with restrictions such as where you can drive, how many miles, and where it is stored.

In short sit down with an agent and go over everything you want and have them help you out.

I'll give a shameless plug here for my agency too.

USAA if you are eligible. Super cheap if you dont want a ton of coverage.

I use Grundy Worldwide, $196.50 annually for $25K of stated value coverage.

For the Grundy, do they have any driving limitations or anything, like for instance only 5,000 miles a year?

I have heard that some classic policies have limitations levied.

I am with Hagerty. $850.00 a year for stated value of $40,000. Thinking of lower the stated value and changing to policy providers to save some money.

many classic car insurers will not insure for off-asphalt use

I got a basic quote from grundy and they were suppose to have an agent look at my file and send me a more indepth quote but that hasn't happened.

I just got an online quote from 'American Collectors' for an annual premium with the full boat coverage/road side assist/actual cash (more coverage than Progressive is giving me) and it was $250 per year with a 7500 mile limit, platinum road side coverage (not that my Toyota would need that...lol)

I'm going to get a quote from Haggerty as well. Using same coverage for all insurance companies of course.

There isn't a mileage limitation, but there is a restricted use clause that says, basically, that it needs to be used as pleasure vehicle, not main transpo. That's wording is in the Texas clause of the policy, so would be the same for you. For me, it's not a big deal; my 40 is just my toy, taken out from time to time to putz around with. Actually, I work out of the house, so I don't drive any of my vehicles that much. YMMV (pun totally intended...) ;)

Hagerty quoted me $400.00 a year for my 78 FJ40 w/original paint and value of 18,000. Garage kept, 2,000 miles a year and the real bummer... they said I can not take it off road. Not what I had in mind.

I have an 80 model 4x4 ford stepside truck that is all original and they told me I couldn't haul anything in it.

I have a friend that has six Ford mustangs and when he had a problem with damage on one it took an arm and a leg to get Hagerty to pay up. You be the judge. Shop around.
