I was planning on using the chevron delo 15/40 on my next oil change on my 91/3FE
I heard yesterday that due to some additives in that oil it could harm the catalyst or an o/2 sensor.
Anyone heard about this ?

are you guys using the new "low emissions" formula?

Thanks!
Is there any difference between Shell, Chevron, mobil ??

it runs great in a 3FE but it is too heavy for winter.

I havent been able to find any of the other formulas besides the "Delo 400 LE" low emissions stuff.
It wouldnt surprise me if thats all they made available to the public.

I live in southern AZ so the winter part doesn't concern me too much.
I guess I could always use a 10W40 :hmm:

unless you hardly drive your rig, you could do a twice-a-year oil change routine that allows you to use a nice heavy oil like delo for the summer and a 5w30 or so for quick winter starts. I think thats what a lot of us do. But its too much of a hassle and expense if you hardly drive it.

Dont you get freezing cold nights down there in the desert?

Its the ZDDP additive that is of concern to cat converters, but many claim it's unjustified. The EPA actually mandated the elimination of it in PCMO's (passenger car motor oils) to increase the life of catalytic converters, but HDEO's (heavy duty engine oils/diesel oils) still maintain some which, in my opinion, is a good thing as its a very effective anti wear additive for engines that do not utilize roller lifters or overhead camshafts.

Rest assured Delo 400LE is a great choice for your engine, provided the weight is an appropriate choice for your climate.

I'm in Tucson AZ and while we do get a few cold days a year they are few and far between.
Whats the standard recommendation for my climate ?

so is that a yes that you guyes are running the low emissions formula?

That is the only kind I have seen at Wally World
I primarily use Mobil Delvac 15w 40 in the summer anyway
And Ill use Delo if wally world does not have the Delvac

I use the delo 15/40 low emissions (all I can find nowadays) with no adverse effects. Great oil for the 80. I use it in the summer months.

Yes, the LE in Delo 400LE is for Low emission. I never see regular Delo 400, or maybe it's not even available anymore.

I would say 10w40 or 15w40 would be a good choice, some folks have reported using 20w50 as well.

15W-40 Delo 400 LE

Year round, north Idaho.

I just try let it idle for a couple minutes when it's cold out before moving, and dont drive like a madman until it hits operating temp.

i use shell rotella or delo 400 in my 3fe 80, atvs and motorcycles, works great no problems.

I would use Delo 400LE year round if we didn't have such cold winters. I just hate using a separate oil for summer and winter use, so I use Rotella T6 5w-40 synthetic (HDEO) full time.

how about 10/40 with lucas iol treatment in fl all year round?
