How do you check fluid levels in the transfer case and Diffs? Went through water and want to see if the fluids are contamonated.

you could pull the drain pulg to see if it has water in it.But if you do that you will need to refill them.

To check the level, take the fill plug out and stick your finger in it. To check on there being contamination... that's different.

If their is water in it and the fill plug is removed mayonnaise looking goo will run out. The added water will overfill the diff.

Unless you were low on fluid in the first place... if nothing oozes out, scoop yer finger or something in there anyway and see what you get.

Remove the fill plug then stick a short piece of clear tubing in, like a fish tank air tube. Put your finger over the other end then pull it out, inspect contents.

Thans for the replies. Once reflilling the Diffs and Tranfer Case, is it possible to accidentally overfill them? Or is that not a concern? For example service specs call for:
Transfer case: SAE 75w90, 1.7L
Differential, front: SAE 80w90, 2.8L
Differential, rear: SAE 80w90, 3.25L

Not possible to really overfill them.

Filling to spec takes you to the bottom of the fill plug. The extra stuff just comes back out.

I guess if you were parked on hill you could overfill the t-case...
