Chasing VIBRATION - please help !! (1 Viewer)

Thanks to everyone for the input and we will keep this going until we find the culprit. Georg does stellar work and I appreciate his commitment to solving the problem. Based on suggestions on this post I will be doing the following over the next couple days.
1. Rebalance and rotate tires
2. Remove wheel spacers
3. Pull rear driveline and run at speed
4. Have engine shop check harmonic balancer
If all else fails...
5. Take back to Georg and let him futz for a few hundred more hours...

Are the tires being spun balanced (vs. static balanced)? Its likely they are being spun balanced but I just thought I'd throw that out there.

Have the tire shop also check for rim damage, out of round, etc. See if their machine can match a 40MPH speed for that size tire or whatever speed you are getting the worst vibration and check balance at that speed.

I also like the idea of trying another set of known good tires and wheels.

Also, a friend had a brand new set of the 37" Goodyear tires that he could not get to run without highway speed vibration and ended up getting a couple of them replaced after taking them back to the tire shop several times. Once the bad ones were repalced, all issues went away. He was told the tires were defective but I don't have any other specific details.

Well I pulled the rear drive line at SHAZAM no more vibration. I ran it up to 55 mph with the front drive line and smooth as silk. Boy is it fun to drive with no vibration.

Next question: The rear driveline goes slightly to the right out of the tcase as the rear diff is offset to the right. Is it normal for the rear diff to be offset to the right of the rear of the tcase?

well, that's pretty emberassing, isn't it?!

i drove the cruiser in 4wd with the new front drive-line but got some resonance/noise so i did'nt take it up to speed and never drove it faster than 40mph in 4wd. i did not run it with the front only.
i'm still perplexed as to why we're having this issue if it really is the rear driveline. the front shaft was built and balanced by the same shop, on the same machines.
the rear offset should not matter....

fwiw, i have another cv shaft at the shop that we can use as a core to have another rear built if that helps you out ross. you can either call me with a measurement on the driveline or i can ship the core to you and you can have it built locally. either way is cool with me.

I would rather keep working with you than go to another driveline shop up here. Once you get it built I can come down and we can install it. How should I measure the driveline? Compressed?

hey ross.
yup, fully compressed would be the safest bet, especially in your case since the rear d-line is sooooo short.

Georg: The driveline is 17 1/2" fully compressed. No need to use your core. Why don't we have an entirely new driveline built to make sure there is no problem.

Honestly I still doubt the driveline is the problem based on all you did to eliminate it as the problem but I think we have to try this to be sure.

well, since the vibration is gone i would have to assume that we can eliminate the tires/rims as the cause.
same goes for the rear axe shafts and differential. they would keep vibrating.

so realistically that only leaves the rear drive-shaft and the rear pinion flange. i'd say lets build another driveline and go from there. you already have a spare front d-line and since you do wheel the rig a spare rear can't hurt.

would you mind calling me tomorrow and we'll get this figured out?!

If you are going to build a new rear drive shaft, then put a CV in. See post 16

NO MORE VIBRATION!! It was the driveline. We had balanced the driveline at two different shops and it appeared ok. We could not find any other possibilities so Georg recommended a new driveline. Had it built just like the first with a CV. Runs perfect with absolutely no vibration. Thanks Georg!

i guess there must have been an issue with the cv on the old driveline then that it would only vibrate at an angle. glad the new shaft solved the problem so you can finally enjoy driving the cruiser again!!!!!
