So I did some searching but there doesn't seem to be any resolution shown. I just had this happen to me earlier today on a drive from sea level to just over 3000' ASL. I took the Otay truck trail just Southeast of San Diego and once at the top I smelled gas. I opened the hood and heard the charcoal canister making noise. I turned off the engine and took this video. I wasn't sure what to do but I figured the system was pressurized from the elevation gain and so I vented the gas cap. Quite a bit of vapor came out and I was pretty nervous with this. Shouldn't the excess pressure be put into the intake? Why wouldn't this be happening? It seemed like the other threads people accepted this as an uncomfortable normal. I was in 4low as the climb up the mountain was steep at times but I don't think I was putting any extreme load on the engine as I hardly got above 2000 Rpm. I took a video of the charcoal canister where you can hear the noise (engine is off). Also uploaded a couple pics from the drive.

Does it throw in a Check Engine warning light? If not, it sounds like the vent valve of the canister is doing his job.

No check engine light. I don't think it is functioning correctly. There is a strong gas smell, meaning the system is pressurizing enough to where it is leaking out and I am smelling it. If it was functioning correctly it would be putting that pressure into the intake to burn. I haven't had this happen on and other vehicle I have owned.

I did not get that noise, but I have had the smell. My issues were vacuum lines and bad vacuum valve(s). I replaced bolth valves in that system, along with all of the vacuum lines, and problem solved.

The post from Steve is likely partly true. There may be a pressure relief valve open, but the VSV's should be doing that job, venting into the intake manifold. Unless they are malfunctioning, which was my case

Do you happen to know the part numbers for the valves?

Welcome. The parts guy from Camelback Toyota, Richard Silba, actually helped me with the correct parts. He also suggested I replace the valves before getting a whole new canister.

it seems as if it did. i replaced the parts several months back and i havent heard the hissing or smelled the gas since then.

So you just replaced the purge valve?

this noise comes every once and a while for me but the smell of gas is always there.... where is the location of the valves and have you had any issues since October?

Tough call but it worked for me. I would strongly consider replacing all of the vacuum hoses and part number 90910-12268 first. It will be less expensive.

However if you do need a new charcoal canister, it will come with that listed vsv...
