Putting the charcoal canister back in my 1980 FJ40 and cannot figure out where this line goes. Circled in blue in the first pic. It comes off the sensor on top of the canister. Second pic is from when I took it apart. Question is, where does the other end of the metal line go? Does it attach somewhere or just vent under the vehicle?

This diagram is for a '78, but I'd assume this part of the smog system is similar to yours. You're holding the outer vent control valve in your photo.

In case you didn't figure it out, I took some photos of my '78.

From the charcoal canister to the steel tube on the firewall. Not a great photo, but the steel tube goes up behind the heater hose with the red flush cap.

Behind the engine on the firewall to the red hose.

Red hose to the evap port on the carb.

I have a 6/79, pretty sure the identical emissions to yours. If you need more pics let me know.

Alternative is to just vent it to the frame rail. It's what Toyota did for all those non-smogged trucks.

Geoff, that is the way I have my 77 hooked up. It took me a while to figure out why it was just stuck in the hole! Since I have a T-hole carb I am thinking of running the other hose into the air cleaner.

The line from the bottom of the canister goes into that line on the right, at least on mine it did. I'll vent the line from the original post under the truck or the air cleaner as emac mentioned
