When changing the plastic speedo drive gear on the bullet that slides into the bearing retainer, do you then have to change the metal worm gear in the bearing retainer housing as well? I had changed from the smaller four speed gear to the larger three speed gear some thousands of miles ago, and today the plastic gear disengaged itself from the shaft on the insert...and i was wondering if I had done something bad earlier? Alan in tornadoalley, who's been at this long enough I really ought to know better....

I don't think you need to do anything extra. I changed my plastic gear to I think 13 teeth (a lot less than stock) and I had no problems.
