chain saw sharpening options

Hi All,

Looking at options to sharpen chain saw for the DIY. Taking to a dealer is not an option. I hava a Stihl and am thinking of just getting their file set rather than using the **** set I got at Home depot.

Thoughts, ideas, what does everyone else do?

I use an electric chain saw sharpener. There is a learning curve with it, but once you get it, I can sharpen 5 chains in 20 minutes.

The tool paid for itself the first year I had it when compared to buying new stihl chains.

I have the hand files, but have not used them since I got the electric model...

I've sharpened chainsaws for 30 yrs. I just use a round file. There is a guide mark on the tooth, and keep the file flat. Easy. The real thing to know is that each tooth should be filed to the same degree. If you've noticed your saw cutting in a bevel/curve, then you've over sharpened one side.

Dremel makes a chainsaw sharpening bit that works great on a cordless dremel. I've used one for abt 5 years now with no problems.

Good tool for the field, with the proper sized stones, I have the corded unit.

That's what I use and have no complaints. It has a guide so it makes it rather easy to be consistent.
