I got a chance to do some troubleshooting on my intermittant CDL indicator light problem tonight.
My center diff locker engages fine (sometimes some forward/ reverse is required) but my indicator light is intermittant. I've read that this indicator switch/sensor can go bad and wanted to check it out.
I shorted the harness and the light came on fine. I wiggled the wiring harness a bunch and got no intermittants or anything. Looks like at least the lower part of the harness is fine.
My friend sat in the drivers seat while I was underneath. He worked the low range lever and the dash switch. Every time the *wirring* of the actuator motor was present and the slack in the front drive shaft was taken up. Some times I had to jiggle the front driveshaft a bit and the locker would engage with a loud *clank*
After the *clank* the indicator light would always come on right afterward.
The indicator light was intermittant a couple of the 30 odd times we locked the center diff. We had to cycle it to get it to work.
I'm wondering if the locker could possible be *partially* engaging and this is causing the indicator switch to NOT send a signal.
I pulled the switch and checked resistance.
open is.... well.. open
no continuity at all
fully closed, it is consistantly very low impedance. .01-.04 ohms
Here's the kicker!: partially closed it gets flaky. from .01 ohms - 21 ohms or so.
How far closed does this switch actually go when engaged? Is my switch faulty? I'm thinking it is, but wanted some advice from the group.
I'd love to just spend the $50-$60 for a new switch and fix this problem, but I'm not sure this is it....
