CAT & Muffler permissable in California

you found a california legal catalytic converter for $80? post up where you found that. California requires all the smog equipment to be present, including the thermosensor that plugs into the cat. If the walker is a "universal" cat (not a direct bolt in), then it probably won't come with the port for the thermosensor, and I guess someone will have to install a port along with the cat.

Are you going to install it or have it installed ?

Magnaflow makes a low-restriction direct-bolt-in and a weld in replacement. CA requires an OBD II replacement. I bought the CA Direct fit off ebay for around $200 shipped. Works great.

As for muffler, that's up to you. You're prolly best off by just finding a GOOD, well-recommended shop in your area and having them do the install - BUT - as 2mbb says, make sure they use a CAT that has the thermosensor bung - I've seen way too many butcher shops just put on a universal and actually CUT OFF the thermosensor lead at the body, where it goes into the cab...

And your muffler exploded because there was unburnt gas- you should look into that, too.

As far as I know, this is the absolute cheapest cat that is CA legal and has the bung for the thermo sensor... I just recently bought one, but haven't installed it yet. (I have other issues to figure out before doing so, so that I don't burn this one up too...)

Amazon.com: Magnaflow 39041 Universal Catalytic Converter - CARB Compliant: Automotive

As far as a muffler is concerned, those aren't regulated by CARB, and have no impact on emissions, so you can use any muffler you like as long as it conforms to your local sound regulations. (max decibels) Honestly, though - I've used mufflers from several brands with differing levels of loudness, (Flowmaster, Edelbrock, Magnaflow, etc.), and I've never had any issues with any of them. You would be fine with whatever brand you want.

Geez,

Why not do a SOR cat per below:

I'll have to look up what I got about a year ago or so. But silly as it sounds California does NOT want OBD II for 62's. When I had my exhaust done they put one OBDII cat in and one that was for non-OBDII as that is what they had on hand. The Muffler shop said that the OBDII was newer and would be ok.

Guess what, when you go to an inspection only place (which I had to do) they failed my visual inspection because of the OBDII cat. fortunately the shop ordered and replaced the ODBII cat for free.

As far as price goes, I paid something like 750 for a new exhuast from the manifold back including magnaflow muffler and two new cats. I'm not sure but I think the cats were somewhere around a hundred bucks each, certainly no more than 150.

Bumping this to see if anyone's bought (and successfully installed) a CA-legal cat recently and what they paid.

I am aware that the Magnaflow 339894 is one of the only bolt-in options, and it's now in the $325-350 range.

SOR sells a CA-compliant bolt-in (brand unspecified) that has a club price of around $300 when you factor in the gaskets and bolts. It's mentioned above in a previous post.

There are some Universal fits (weld-in) for less but an hour of labor at an exhaust shop will probably bring it up to that $300 range. It also sounds like the thermo sensor mount isn't always present or in the right place on these.

Anything else out there that I'm missing or is that it?

Thanks
DF

www.discountconverter.com lists a bolt-in CARB certified cat for $285. I installed one of their non CA cats 5 years ago and haven't had any trouble passing emissions in NM. It bolted up just fine. Sorry no direct experience with CA, but it's another option.

The Magnaflow is still your only bet, if you want a direct bolt in with a thermosensor port that kind of works with the OE set up. It's also a 3-way instead of the old 2-way CAT (I think the OE Toyo CAT was 2-way OBD I), converter so it also acts on NOx emissions.

If you can get the Non-CA version it's the same thing, only without the CARB stamp. The test guy won't even look. Drive to NV and buy one.

BHK and Spike, thanks for the replies. I'll look at discountconverters though I think the 3-way Magnaflow sounds like the ticket. Now to do the math on gas + time to Reno...adding a significant cushion of course for the mandatory stop at Cabela's.
