Has anyone found a source for carrier bearings for the cable locking Diffs? I have an '88 BJ74, and I've worn out the rear diff bearings. (240K, 4.88 gears, marlin toybox, lots of mud, no diff breather)

The Koyo part number is 32012. The dimensions are 95mm OD, 60mm ID, and 26mm thick (I think!?)

Tried commercial bearing, who tried Timkin, NSK, and Koyo, and couldn't find anything. Randy's Rung and pinion didn't have the info handy.

Do these bearings cross over to any other application? What about 80 series elec. locker bearings?

Do you have the EPC?

If not PM your VIN. I can use that to play with in the epc for your specific diff. Then see if the part number crosses into anything else.

My EPC is only Japan and Europe. So yours would be the first VIN I have tried in it. Otherwise I normally hunt around kinda blind in there.

same part number for locker BJ74 and HDJ81 carriers...

I went to BC Bearing today, and after a lengthy search, they managed to find Timkin bearings in stock in Toronto. They get a weekly shipment to Vancouver, then 2 days to Calgary. Should be hear mid-next week. $32 each.

I figured they were probably a match to an 80 series bearing. Thanks for confirming that.

I didn't bother calling Toyota for a price. Lumpy Bastard bought a pair of small 'standard' carrier bearings at $77 each. Ouch.

what ones did yo buy and where?
did the shop order the wrong bearing part number?

Not really Toyota's fault. I was installing an ARB for my '85 BJ70 with '79 BJ40 diffs, and figured they would fit the ARB. Yes they were $77 each.

What I really needed for my ARB (model # RD124) was a set of Timken 32010XJ.

I got them from Commercial Bearing for $32 each.

Well, Don't use Timken 32012 bearings. They seem to be identical except for the thickness of the race, which is critical to setting backlash on these 'shimmed and not screwed' carriers.

Koyo 32012J/IB-N Race Thickness - 21mm
Timken Y32012X race thickness - 17.4mm

Good news is that these are the same bearings used in USDM and CDM 80 series with lockers. Perhaps there's hope to find some of these.

Then there's the matter of the Shims, or 'Washers' as they are called. Toyota part numbers 90201-79001 through 79023 depending on thickness you need.

Perhaps Randy's R&P can help.

You may want to try Cruiser Outfitters. I have been continually surprised at the obscure parts Kurt has hiding in his inventory! He sells diff bearing kits with Koyo bearings and all the necessary shims or crush sleeve, oil seal and pinion nut. If he doesn't have them he can probably get them.

Good luck,

You may want to try Cruiser Outfitters.

Good recommendation. USD$63 each for factory Toyota Bearings. (Local Toyota Dealer that offers me a discount wanted $187.50 list, $160 with my discount).

Curt at Cruiser Outfitters said that he has tried upside down and backwards to find an aftermarket bearing that crosses over, including going to the local Koyo dealer. It would seem that Toyota has Koyo manufacture these specially for thier locking differential application. Toyota uses the extra thick race to space the bearing caps back from the carrier.

Anyway, he had some in stock for me, so they're on the way.

Randy's R&P said they cannot get them, and can also only source them from Toyota.

just wondering if coul be posible made iun a machine shop some sort of " bushing " to match the racer thicknes ?

Quite likely. The 'washers' that lay behind the races are just rings of metal of specific sizes. In fact, the large pinion shims are almost the right size for doing some fine adjustments on the backlash.
