dudes,

i have a 67 FJ40 that is really close to stock. i go on long trips with the kids and they always complain about the noise. what are your thoughts about buying one of those fancy carpet kits from SOR? is it sacreligious to put a carpet kit in a 67? I really like the stock look but I am not going too crazy on the resto.

thoughts... opinions.... feelings... all are welcome.

:D

I had carpet in my 83. Loved it but make sure you take it out when the top is off and check that it is not wet pretty regularly (like every time it rains). They can really accelerate rust if you're not careful.

Specter's carpet is really nice.

I plan to just hand out ear plugs....cheaper too. :steer:

My truck came with decent carpet in it, but it really doesn't help much with the noise. If you keep it in a garage, you don't have to worry as much about trapped water under the carpet. If you keep it outside all the time, you may have a problem.

Once I'm done the with resto, the carpet will go (although I'll keep the back piece to use as an occassional cargo mat).

Dynamat - did my 40 and it made a big difference in road noise. But, truthfully on the hwy it is still loud. Running a sm420 with 3spd transfer case. Did cut down on the heat from metal tub on my feet.

Carpet will not do you much good to be honest.

As much as I hate bedliner in the cab...that would actually serve as the best sound deadening for the task at hand. I actually Linexed the underneath of my tub and firewall....partially for that reason. Also, I double linexed my transmission hump (inside and out).

Most of the noise that I hear in FJ40s that I have driven is squeaking and rattles....a can of WD40 and a wrench may help as well.

The other source of noise is generally from old and crummy window seals in the doors....I did not think too much about it until CDan was selling me new weatherstripping. I am glad that I bought what he suggested because the rattles and squeaks are significantly less (even in the partially completed state of my FJ40)

I have dynamat covered with the felt/foil insulation Summit sells, covered with a cheap generic carpet I made out of rubber shop mats from the hardware store, covered with the SOR carpet mats - I have a softtop, so I am probably maxed out as far as noise reduction goes

not putting the pedal down that far would also help with noise, but that's not realistic on long drives

was thinking about SOR's carpet also. The noise, complaining, and kids go hand in hand. Ear plugs,Ipod,s, and even some duct tape (joking) might help with the REAL noise! Got 3 of my own.Been there, done that.

Used Quiet Crap from Cruiser Crap on the floors, firewall, tailgate, doors and cargo sides in my FJ55. Significant noise improvement and increased insulation. Much cheaper than DynaMat and essentially the same thing.

the number 1 source of rattles in my truck for all these years has been the damn Hi-Lift jack

for the first 5 years, I carried it in the truck across the back behind the bench seat - when I got totally fed up one day on White Rim, Kevin fabbed a mount for me on the spare tire carrier outside - it still rattles like a mofo :bang: :bang: :bang: I buffer it with insulation foam where I can, strap the insulation foam in with small bungee cords - but they do get loose, and then the whole cycle starts again

IH8 HI-LIFTS  the only reason I carry it is because of TLCA requirements

Flooring.

I went to the local Farm and Fleet store (See Theisen's, Orchelen's, Blaine's Farm and Fleet, or Fleetway....) and picked up a heavy 3/4" (they may call it 1") thick horse stall mat. (Keeps their hooves from getting sore from standing on concrete all day.) These are usually 4' x 8' or 4' x 6', and cost about $40 - 60. They are made of recycled rubber and hold up to any abuse you can dish out.
They'll cut with a hack saw or a sawzall and work excellent as a waterproof floor mat for up front and an indestructable bed liner for the back. One mat will do all of your '40 with lots left over to use for other projects or locations you need to put a solid pad for vibration isolation. (I used some of this to pad my Hi-Lift Jack.) Anyways, it's thick enough that with a little fore thought you can even get those front floor mats to wrap all the way around the side and fit the contour as well.
If you could figure out how to mount them on the inside of the wheel wells and not hold moisture you would really be on to something!
I'm sure lots of things will work well, but for $40 this one worked out pretty good for me and mine comes pretty close to a acting as a daily driver. (But your still gonna have to holler at 75 mph in a head wind..... Maybe that's why I like making a road trip in this old beast: other than the terrible road noise, it's awful quiet in the cab.) :steer::doh:

I did lot of sounddeadner in my FJ40, then the carpet kit from cruisersolutions. I liked his carpet kit, because it was very complete - covered the tank and side pannels. It made a big differeance..
