If it's not a daily driver you might consider sending it to one of the guys that specialize in the FJ40 Aisan carbs. Working from memory I want to say Orangefj45? Someone here will know the goto guys.

no definitely not a daily driver. Would be driving it during the summer from time to time, hopefully I'll make it out to a meeting one of these days in it. But I was just curious if a local shop can do just as good or if they really are a specialty item I should only trust Toyota FJ40 experts with.

I've heard horror stories of guys tuning them for many many days/weeks/months and still not getting it to run right. I think my biggest thing is probably running too rich but I'm no expert. Quite the opposite, they sort of scare me because I don't want to screw it up and then my landcruiser stops running because of it.

Would for sure use a specialist like marks off-road so you know it’s done right and with the best parts available. Not cheap but you can trust it will be done right.

I do also need to rebuild my steering box so I could send both out to him for rebuilding and get them both back ready to run. Thanks for the recommendations. Btw, any idea what that costs if you've ever had something done by Mark.

I'd haul it down to Valley Hybrid if I were you. Take the whole truck and let Georg rebuild and tune the carb. I will happily haul it on my flatbed car hauler if you pay for gas and lunch at Lucille's BBQ. :)

That's not a bad deal. He can do it during that time if we were to drive down there? I would imagine we'd need to schedule something ahead of time but that might be a fun little trip. How far is the drive?

It is about three hours from Reno.

Chances are you'd have to leave it with him, but you could drive it home when you go to pick it up! Lemme know what you wanna do and I'll make some time. I will be out of town May 6-10, otherwise I should be free for a day.

I doubt half of the mechanics these days even know what a carburetor is anymore.

Georg would be very high on the recommended list.

Before I went mad and tore my 40 apart, I called around to several shops in Reno/Sparks including the VW place and to a one they all said "just put EFI on it". None of them wanted to do carb work. So... I ordered an affordable fuel injection kit for way too much money.

Now Holley offers the 2-barrel Sniper EFI that'll adapt to the F and 2F for around $1100. Do the math @airon23, the drive, Georg's invoice, rebuild kit, and it might be worth doing a Holley EFI. I know you'll be a lot happier with throttle response and computer controlled air/fuel mixing. The only thing I don't like about the kit is that they don't have a provision for computer controlled distributor. It is either vacuum or static electric.

Something else to consider before a rebuild is that a new Weber is around $500. At that price, a new carb might be better than a rebuild.

I am MORE THAN HAPPY to haul you and your 40 to Georg's though. Any excuse for a roadtrip is good enough for me!

If you are looking to get the carb rebuilt and not in too much of a hurry send it to JimC. I rebuilt mine a couple times on my own, sonic cleaner dipped the parts and still couldn't get it to run right. Sent it off to Jim and good lord, it is like a new truck. Well worth the money and wait if you have the time.

The best damned carb guy I ever had the pleasure of dealing with had 2 storage units over off terminal and mill. He lived in one and rebuilt carbs in the other. Stunk to high heaven, but give him a carb and he was like a magician. Sadly he passed a few years ago. Super guy, I always enjoyed talking with him.
Sorry I am of no help, all the carb talk got me reminiscing.

There are several threads on mud about these carbs. For the money, the guy selling Chinese knock off seems to have a good reputation.

Airon, have you sorted this out yet? I wandered into this forum looking for information on the Ruby Mtns and saw this. I Am planning to pass thru northern NV/Reno at the end of July in my 40. LMK.

I still have not sorted this out no. I thought about going the fuel injection route, but if I do it won't be for some time.
That sounds like it would be great. Let me know or message me if you think you would have the time to help me out with this.
You can reach me at 775-232-8298 too if needed.

What did you want to know about the Rubies?
