I have a 71 FJ40 with the original F motor.

I'm replacing my fuel tank and carburetor, and am looking for advice...

1st - the fuel tank - poly or steel? I saw the thread regarding the poly's having issues with collapsing, but that was from 5 years ago and i'm not sure if that issue is still around. The poly is about $220 wheras the steel I saw for about $350 (CCoT). Does anyone have a recent opinion one way or the other, or a suggestion for a better source (price-wise).

2nd - Carb - I still have the stock aisan carb, but it's not performing well even after 2 rebuilds. I have been looking at some weber carbs, and when I last checked (sometime last year) I thought the 34/34 looked like a good choice, but looking around the forums today, I saw more looking towards the 32/36 or even the 38.

Thanks!

If your carburetor isn't working well because of poor vacuum in the engine, then a replacement carb of ANY variety will most likely not solve the problem. If you want to spend money to learn this for yourself, I guess you can do that. If you want help diagnosing the problem before you spend money, post up a separate thread. Be prepared to have as much information as possible, including:

vacuum reading at idle and 1000rpm, 1500 rpm
ignition timing
compression

I bought an OEM tank from TOYOTA last summer for slightly more than the poly tank price you mentioned. A buddy had the replacement poly tank and ended up buying the steel tank because of the smell in the cab. Go with steel or move the tank out of the people pod and buy the aux tank from Mark's Off Road.

Thanks for your responses. I just talked to CruiserDan and I'll be picking up an OEM steel tank from him next week. I'll probably just replace the tank for now and then troubleshoot the existing carb, posting back here for assistance :)

one note...I don't exactly have a tach attached or available at the moment for the vacuum reading at various rpm's...any alternate suggestions?

Thanks!

You can buy an inexpensive vacuum gauge from an autoparts store and hook it into your brake booster port on the intake manifold. If you have a vacuum reading at idle (and assuming you're close to 650 rpm at idle) that will help a lot.

Stick with your Aisan carb, read these following links:
