Carburetor fan on FJ60 (1 Viewer)

There is a fan mounted on the drivers side of the engine compartment that seems to be there to blow cooler air on the carburetor. Does this run all the time, or is it controlled by a thermostat? If it's supposed to run constantly, miine's not functioning.,..

Where can I find some documentation and or replacement, if needed?

you've got to get that bad boy working...

It's thermostatically controlled - there is a small sensor that is bolted in just underneath the intake manifold. It has an electrical lead that runs into the wiring harness (and I believe it comes out at the same place as some of the carb electrical, or the wiring that goes to the fan.)

There is also a computer behind the kick pannel on the passengers side. You can look it up inj the Haynes manual - it will tell you where it is...

The fan kicks on when the ignition is shut off and the motor temp is about normal. you can hear it sucking air through the chrome side vent on yout driver's side fender.

To save time and money, test your components. Wire the fan directly into the battery, and if it blows, you're good there. (I had the same problem recently) If it doesn't, I have been told that you can pull the fan motor apart and clean it up, and that usually fixes it. Use commercially available electric motor cleaner - you can find it at any auto parts store.

If the fan motor is fine, pull out the computer and take it apart and look for any scortching/damage. If none is visible, you can do the smell test - sniff at it and see if you smell any burnt electrical smell. If you do, you can replace it for about $50 from cruiserparts.net.

If that's good, check the sensor. My truck was missing the sensor. The previous Owner had taken it in to a DFW Land Cruiser "specialist" for some head work, and when they put it all back together, they left off the sensor. The PO put a new carb on it, then sold it because there were still problems with it, I've rebuild the carb about 3 times in the last 6 months (and it's still acting up - but I also found that during the "specialist" rebuild, they didn't put another part back on right either, and that's part of my headache too.) Anyway, enough kvetching. Cruiserparts.net has the sensor, if you need it, for about $30. There's also a chance that the wire that leads to the sensor has burned through. It's very close to the exhaust manifold, and I hear it's a common enough problem.

Anyway, if you need anything, let me know. I am WAY too familiar with this set up, but would be more than happy to help out...or, better still, call James at cruiserparts.net. I had a hard time finding where that sensor should be and he helped me locate it (I called him like 5 times on Sat. afternoon trying to find the stupid thing, the wire, etc. and he was totally cool about it.)

SWANK! You da' man. I will check it out. The fan blows (I think) when I shut off the engine... I will test. The truck is new to me, but the 2F seems to run fine, and "if it ain;'t broke..."

Reviving an old thread, but where doe the wire connect to the electric fan? My wire either broke or melted

Can anyone post pictures of this thermal switch?

I have a stet of severed wires that aren't connected to anything and I believe they possibly belong to the thermal switch, but I can't seem to find it.

it is attached to a bracket under the exhaust manifold between the carb and firewall. it is a single wire. if you figure out the wire and don't have a switch, you can run the wire to a ground but then the fan will come on everytime the key is turned off.

Here it is. I cut the PCV pipe off the bracket, otherwise, yours should be the same.
