When I took apart my '68 1bbl carb, there was not a step up rod in it.

I also read somewhere (here, pirate or birfield) about others with the Asain 68 1bbl carb did not have step-up rods either.

Things that make you go hmmmmm.........

If it has the arm for a needle, and the humongous main jet, then there should be a step up rod.
If there is no lifter arm and the main jet is normal size, then no step up rod (needle).

Thanks for the info Jim.

My carb does have an arm for the needle. Don't know about the main jet though.

I don't have my FSM close by but the step-up rod prevents the mixture from becoming too lean when powering  but my engine runs pretty good ideling, steping on it and crusing @ 70 or so...

WHat will I gain if I install one? Fuel ecomony?

FWIW and as far as I can tell, nobody has been in the carb since birth to take it out. I also don't have the "spare rod" either as the FSM mentions.
