Hi guys and gals!

I am new to the forum. I have a 1980 FJ 40 and its been sitting for quite some time, a few years. I am doing a maintainence overhaul this weekend to try to get it up and going. I was told by the original owner that the carb was going and they had to put a new head on to get it to pass emissions here in Utah. I know it has lost alot of power. I am wondering is it worth it to get the carb rebuilt? Or should I grab a new one and put it in? If so which? I am still trying to search the posts so appologizes if this has already been asked.

Thanks!

Tyler

Ditto, we can recommed this enough, His prices are very reasonable, you will end up with a top notch job. since your dealing with emissions this is especially critical for you. The longer you wait the longer is backlog will be. It's wheeling season and when summer hits he'll be booked up for a while. Good Luck with your project and post up some truck porn pics for us to check out. WE LOVE PICTURES!

Before you sent it Jim C check a few things yourself.

Have you double checked the vacuum lines and all of the emission items for being connected correctly?
Have you adjustted the valves and retorqued the head since you had the head off?
Have you checked the timing and set it correctly? (remove vacuum lines fron Distributor and plug them before loosinging the distributor to set the timing.)
Have you replace the fuel filter?

Are the fuel lines connected properly? The one with the banjo bolt nearest the valve cover is the return line, not the feed line. It is common to get them crossed at the pump.

If you remove the return line and the feed line on the carburetor itself, you will see a strainer screen. The strainer screen is the last filter before the inlet needle. Is the screen clean?

If all of this has been done and you have the same problem, send the carb to FJ40Jim.

If none of this has been done and you send the carb to FJ40Jim. He will do a great job of rebuilding your carburetor but it will still run like crap. Jim runs and adjusts all carburetors on his stationary eninge before sending them back.

How do you know that something is wrong with the carb?
Why do you believe the previous owner?
How do you know it has "lost power"?
A bad carb doesn't just "lose power".

carb

It may not be a bad thing to rebuild the carb but I would take the POs word with a grain of salt that that is the problem without checking it out for myself

Just see if you can get it running and see what's what?

check compression
fuel to carb
spark from spark plug wires
timing set correctly
good fresh fuel ---and maybe bypass the tank with a new line and gas can if it has been sitting a while---just disconnect and run a hose from the fuel can to the inlet for the fuel pump
check vacuum lines
valve adjustment (cause he swapped the head)

Any details on the head swap? did he just put a rebuilt 2f head on
?

But yeah, check it out for yourself and then decide what to do.

x10 on the Jim C. rebuild. The price is reasonable enough to at least know you're starting with a fresh carb since it has sat for several years.
