Alright...I've done just about everything I can apart from tearing the carb back down to get the cruiser to run well. I am about 99% sure the carburetor is the issue.

Here is what its doing...it'll start up just fine...but idles a bit rough, but not too bad. The issue comes when I push the gas...it does nothing but sputter, choke and the idle falls off. Doesn't seem to matter how fast or slow I push the pedal in, not much of a response but sputtering and really rough idle. I've taken the air cleaner off, and pulled the throttle lever when its turned off...it spits fuel into the chamber.

I checked the plug wires...all new, and they are secure. I can't tell that I have a vacuum leak, I don't feel air moving anywhere. Timing should be good. It ran fine for about 3 days before it started having issues.

So is anybody who is smarter than me free over the next few days to come down to Pueblo to see if we can get this problem worked out? I'm pretty free the next few days and can work around schedules if need be. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
 
I'm definitely not a carb expert, but I would say that this sounds like something may worked loose since it ran well previously. It may be worth checking the adjustment screws to see if any are loose/missing. It might also be worth checking electrical, engine ground, coil ground,fuel pump (unless 40's are mechanical?) etc.

I don't think I can make it down to help this weekend, or that you would be smart to want me there, since I really haven't tuned/repaired a carb before. I can't wait to see the truck in person. Hopefully you get this fixed up quick. Good luck!
 
I'd love to come down, but I'm afraid my "working on carbs" experience is limited to adjusting the idle screw and shooting carb cleaner down the barrel. Hope you get the gremlins out soon so you can get her out and about now that the weather's nice again.
 
Not a carb guy either - since nobody else is I may as well put in my $0.02

I think it could actually be a distributor problem - when you push the throttle there's something called a vacuum advance in the distributor that should advance the timing and accelerate the engine. Check the vacuum hose to the distributor and such. That vacuum advance mechanism probably has a diaphragm in it - maybe that failed or it's otherwise stuck.

And as noted above, I have no actual idea what I'm talking about.

When it stumbles, is it showing black smoke out of the tailpipe?

This will tell you if its stumbling on a lean or rich condition, and that's important. If it's too lean, that would be an indication of a vacuum leak in the system, or your emissions equipment (if you have any), or your accelerator pump could be not working. Too rich, and you might check to see if you have a float that is stuck, or a needle has dried out and is allowing fuel past it. Do you have a fuel level window? How does it look?

What about the choke? manual, or electric? is it stuck?

Does your cruiser have that silly "heat riser valve" exhaust flapper thingy with the bi-metal spring that cruisers came with? is it stuck shut?
 
I think Eric is on to something...I talked to a couple of old timers here about what the issue may be, and they thought it was the distributor and timing. It sounded like an easy fix, but hard to do by myself...just loosen the dizzy up and rotate slightly while running. I thought I had it, but must have been slightly off...and when I moved it, I moved it too much. I may just need to find some help to work with me on getting the timing down.

Luke...no black smoke...just no response with the accelerator. That is why the old timers were saying its the timing and the distributor.
 
Timing would be a easy fix. That would be great news.

Buy a cheap timing light and get accurate readings, I've listened to people talking about being able to time engines by ear or by feel.... I'm not buying any of that BS. Lol. Timing lights don't lie. Just curious, are the timing marks for the Chevy engine on the flywheel like they are on the 2F?
 
On my SBC timing marks are etched into harmonic balancer on the front of the motor, pointer is on drivers side IIRC.

That's no fun. My 3FE has the timing marks on the flywheel. I have to rest my head on the fan shroud to adjust my timing :eek:

Mine had a 250 in it before I went the 383 route. I had looked at the 292 as a replacement since it would have been a bolt in affair. A free 350 turned up first though. A hot I6 sounds killer IMO.
 
Read the specs, and the 292 was rated to put out 215 Ft pounds of torque.... At 1600 RPM! Right off idle. Crazy inline sixes.
 
OK...finally got it running...had a guy come help me out. It was melted points. He wasn't sure what was up with that...maybe cheap set since it was mostly plastic. So...a few bucks later, points replaced and its back running great. I'm waiting to see if that happens again, then we'll know too much voltages is running through the dizzy, and we can put a resister in the line or do an electronic ignition. But...its back on the road...
 
The guy who came and helped me told me about one of those...said that if I blow this set of points to install a system like that and it should do the trick. Time will tell. So far today it got me to the pizza shop and back!
