I spent a couple days generating a schematic and reverse engineering this:

This is great! I am in the process of trying to get my system up and running. Need to test the temp sensor and/or just ground the blue wire and see if it runs now that I have replaced the 5 A fuse. I may be in the market to have mine repaired. I think building an update module that would function with a newer sensor would be a winner - plug and play version of what @GA Architect and others have described. Clearly there is a market on MUD.
 
@unixman made a PIC based replacement. Honestly the Toyota controllers are very well engineered and are worth repairing.
