Yesss!! If something changes, let me know ASAP. My friend Tracy is on stand by.

Ali, slight dilemma. I have no way to carry extra fuel, except inside my rig. Not to excited to do that. Will not carrying extra fuel be an issue?

The NATO cans are totally fine for inside storage and that's the only way I used to carry fuel and still do in the 4runner. Club members own them and I have an old one that STILL doesn't leak fumes. So, you'll be fine.

Does NPS care how many people are on the permit or only the number of vehicles? My permit has 2 people/rig.

I don't think they do nor they check in my limited experience. You're allowed nine per permit and three rigs.

If you gas up in Monticello you should not have a problem. Some of us are glad to share fuel.

I don't remember--how close are the campsites to each other? Is anyone planning on fire? Permit says no open fires, only charcoal on a pan/grill.

Pappy, will you bring all your solar? I'd like to check it out and maybe borrow some juice if the rig stays put for long.

I'm trying to get organized and packed this week. I will be traveling for work Sunday thru Wednesday next week, so time is short.

Anyone else bringing bikes?

I will bring both panels (40w & 45w), and you are welcome to one for as much as you need.

We will be exploring inside Canyonlands like possibly go check out Bobby's hole or other places that we deem worthy. Hence my comment about one jerry can of fuel was primarily to get that warm/fuzzy feeling :)

The distance between Monticello and Devil's kitchen CG is 113 miles and them V8s tend to suck the fuel down in 4low, as we all know :bang:

I’d like to bring my hardtail, but I don’t currently have a rack I’m super comfortable with in rough terrain. Anyone else bringing bikes? Maybe I’ll rig something up with some guy wires or something.

Ali, not sure if it matters at all or not, but I think my dad is going to be riding along with me, so that makes two in my truck. Just a heads up.

Cool, thx for the heads up.

I called and confirmed my permit with the backcountry office today. 3 rigs/9 people

@2manycruisers David, please do the same with your permit.

Thanks.

Morning all,

There is a pit toilet at this location and this link has a pic of the setup: Devils Kitchen | Latest 2019 Reviews & Photos

I highlighted the important bits below from the link above:
-----------------------------------
The Devil’s Kitchen is a “near” backcountry campsite. I say that this is "near" backcountry because the campsite is accessible with a 4x4 vehicle. Or one can reach it by hiking in. The main attraction of the area is of course a visit to the Devil’s Kitchen and the nearby needle formations in Chesler Park. The Devil's Kitchen is an natural alcove within some of the rock formations. You'll probably spot the latrine toilet before you spot the kitchen. Just past the latrine toilet is a huge rock overhang. Pass under the overhang and you'll enter the kitchen. It is an enclosed area shaded by the tall rock walls. The temperature and climate inside the alcove is cool and noticeably different than the temperature in the surrounding plateau area which is exposed and much warmer.

This is a backcountry campsite in The Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. This is dispersed camping so there are no services nor amenities once you leave the trailhead. Leave No Trace principles apply. WAG bags required. Carry in any water that you might need because water is scarce or non-existant.

-----------------------------------------

We'll be hiking and MTBing so bring appropriate gear, advil, Epi pens, inhalers, rain gear, etc 🤣

Looks like I got Camp site #1 and David has #3. According to the 'net, the drive from the Needles visitor center to the CG is approx two hours.

I'm thinking we can convoy together thurs am unless someone wants to leave wed after work to shorten the drive. I'm guessing that'll be Pappy!

As of now, I'll depart Thursday am. Let's meetup at the Home Depot in Bernalillo, say no later than 8am? It's a 7.5 hour drive to the actual CG from my house and it'd be nice to setup camp before the sun sets over the Needles.

We won't have to check in at the visitor center so that'll speed things up a tad.

Ya, leaving Wednesday so I don't have to slow you 6 & 8s down. Plus, how can I resist a few extra days in Utah.

I'm attaching most of my permit and some backcountry ethics the NPS sent me.

Note that open fires are not allowed. Is anyone planning to bring charcoal and a pan or grill? I don't need it for my dinners, but it's going to be cold at night and also plan to do smores. I'll bring one if nobody else is.

... but it's going to be cold at night ....

Forecast for the weekend is stupid cold. This is the Weather Service forecast for the Needles Visitor Center. Forecasts for Monticello put night time temps in the teens.

Bring plenty of warm cloths and bedding.
