Can’t Align Because of Steering Rack? (1 Viewer)

I placed my order with Toyota of Dallas this evening for the brand new rack and D-shaped bushing. It will take them 1 day to get it from their distribution center to the dealership, and then about 3 days to get to me - ETA is Tuesday. All other places (McGeorge, Camelback, one in ATL but I forgot the name of it) wouldn't have it to me until closer to the end of the month unless I wanted to pay $200+ in shipping alone. In the end it will save me about $200 so I'm sitting right around $1000 for new rack, bushings, flush, alignment, & associated labor. Seems fair to me but what do I know?

Hey you saved a bit and got the job done in a reasonable amount of time. Sounds good to me.

My new D bushing that was urethane only lasted about 1 year and got sloppy. My whole rack was moving about 1/8” x 1/4” when turning the wheel, which then trashed the other bushings. I replaced with rubber ones, and that was fun.

Is AT-205 the "good" stuff to use for minor leaks on these? I don't have a leak, just curious.

The only problem with buying non-OEM parts such as Whiteline poly bushings is the dealer will not install them. Obviously I would prefer them for their longevity, but since I’m going through the dealer for labor they will not install non-OEM parts

I'm not sure the steering rack isn't supposed to move a little left to right by design and your alignment guy had never worked on a 100 series before.

Brand new steering rack and D-shaped bushing just showed up (thankfully undamaged). Truck goes in on Wednesday and hopefully will be done Friday or Saturday.

make sure they put coolant back in before leaving the shop.
😂Oh I’ll make sure of it and I’ll do a thorough inspection once it’s done before I leave the dealer!

Does anyone know if I'd run into any issues from doing a vinyl hood blackout panel after my ceramic coating job? I assume I'll be totally fine if I choose to do that, but I wasn't sure if the adhesion could be negatively effected at all?

Strange.

So far I’m loving this ceramic coating, water beads up and sheets off so nicely. In my opinion better than waxes I’ve used in the past. Also, the coating I used on the glass is fantastic. Wiper blades are smooth (no chattering) and streak-free, really don’t even have to use them at highway speeds, and it’s the most transparent my glass has been in years.

Worn bushings doesn't really effect the alignment, but it will effect centering the steering wheel. The rack actually shifts back an forth moving the wheels with it. I have had an issue with an off center steering wheel for a while. I realized at my last alignment that it was worn out steering rack bushings allowing play that kept the steering wheel from returning to center.

UPDATE: Just picked the truck up and it’s an absolute night and day difference in steering feel and tracking while on the road. Drives straight, not nearly as many vibrations are transferred into the steering wheel, and overall it drives much better. I also got them to do an alignment and they got everything in spec! Most importantly they DID refill all my coolant to the proper levels and made sure to burp the cooling system and insure it circulated through the heater core. Only thing they forgot was to put the skid plate back on but I noticed that when I picked it up and sure enough it was leaning against the wall in the corner hah. Super happy this all got resolved and for a grand total of $1000 isn’t too bad!
