86 FJ60 with H-41 and split t case.

Going to drop them both, and seal them up to stop the leaks. Don’t ‘plan’ on a rebuild or messing with the pre load. We shall see tho.

I’ve done a fair amount of ‘Search’ on this and have found some good info but I hoping there is a good thread or two that has good pics and a Better step by step Than what I’ve found so far.

Appreciate any help.

John I know you don’t want a rebuild but OTRAM’s video does show the sealing aspects you are needing for the split case.

Thanks to both.👍

I‘ve already ordered the kit. Prob will make more sense once I get it in my hands.

EDIT: I have looked at Otram’s video. He talks about using on the paper gaskets an ‘Orange FIPG Toyota transmission sealant’. Don’t think I’ve seen that stuff before.

Red RTV and gaskets. Done it. Works well.

@ceylonfj40nut ok, just checked my notes, he talks about Orange Toyota FIPG for transmissions for the ‘outside of seals’...not gaskets. Ever heard of this stuff?

Ah ha. The Man speaks, thank you Sir!👍🎯🇺🇸

Thanks @cruiserpilot Lots of info there. I’ll start reading!🧰🛠

@John McVicker I’m rebuilding my transfer case but not the H42 4 speed. However, I would like to replace all 4 speed gaskets. I’m not sure this thread completely answered your question. Anyway, in your experience, in replacing the front bearing retainer, did you need to preload the bearing when replacing this gasket? Image below for reference.

Sorry @Ackcruisers I have not yet started my reseal efforts. Hopefully someone can chime in tho.

You don’t. It’s just a cover with a paper gasket behind it. Don’t forget the shaft seal as well.

to add another question to your thread as i’m about to go chasing leaks myself... what’s the best way to access the top of the transmission? drop it with the case on as one unit or pull the interior and tranny hump? i had my t case rebuild a few weeks ago and while it was being done had the rear housing of my h55 resealed. it’s still leaking and the guys at the shop think it’s probably the top plate. how hard is it to drop the tranny without a hoist. i do have a low lift tranny jack. i have an oil leak at the back end of my engine as well that i fear is main rear seal but actually thing it could be oil pan. maybe it’s time to bite the billet and pull it?
