I was lucky enough to buy a cruiser without factory air conditioning, so I'm planning on getting a whole aftermarket setup. (Or would it be easier to source a full setup from a parts truck...?)

I also want to desmog, so, instead of an idler pulley, would could I swap in the AC pump in the smog pump's place?

Of course I'd have to get a bracket made but that's not a big deal.

Nah.
coolerman is the way to go, but you want it on a diff belt if you can. AC no workie, no runnie.

You can put the Airpump on a honda alt, a spare pulley, or a gutted air pump.

But keep it simple. A basic 60, can run the belt w an old pair of panty hose. Don't make it more complicated. Thats for Jeeps.

not sure there is enough room where the smog pump is located to install an a/c compressor.

easier in the stock location then it is all closer to where it needs to go into the firewall and condenser
