Hey Matt,

I am contemplating a five speed conversion. I currently have a four-speed manual conversion on my 62. I am running 35 inch tires, and have FJ60 differential gears. If I went to stock 62 gears, and did a five speed, what would my cruising RPM be on the highway?

Can anyone give any real time results With that set up?

Have a great day,

Joel

Edit,

Hey Mud,

LOL

Voice dictate strikes again

Differential Gearing would be my first choice with the H42 or the H55F. I'm Running 4.88's with 35's and an H55F .

How did that combination work on the highway? I’m sure it has some good pep around town!

I have a 60 with the h55f, 4.11 diffs and 35” tires. I’m turning 2500 rpm at 75mph (per gps). Speedo is about 10% over.

I should mention that, with this gearing, I’m in 3rd gear on long steep hills. I feel
like 4.56 might put me in 4th.

Just Got Back from a trip out west 5,248 mi. round trip, truck was loaded, camping gear inside and on the roof rack. My speedo is off
by 5-7 mph. The Happy Place for my best mpg is 2500-2700 rpm which puts me at 65-67 mph on the intestate. After final calculations I averaged 11.85 mpg. Which I was quite happy with.

Sounds like an awesome trip man, and it sounds like your truck did great…

Thanks for the feedback so far, everybody! I have a friend that is going to have a five speed available soon, and just starting to think towards the swap.

Since I already have a four-speed conversion, will my current bell housing work with this set up?

Sorry, this is from a heep site, but it's a great gear ratio calculator.

It factors transmission, transfer case, differentials and tire size.

Oops...should have read all the posts...

My BJ60 has 4.11 gears from a FJ62, and an H55f. With 33" tires, the speedo is bang-on. I would expect your speedo to be out by about 10%.
2nd that.

my FJ62 with stock diffs (4.11's) + BFG 33's + H55F - speedo is off 10%. cruising down the highway in 5th at 2500 rpm = roughly 65mph. push it to 3000 rpm - speedo needle @ 70, but really its 77 ish.
(which in oregon will get you a ticket all day, not to mention suck gas like hell!!)

Great minds think alike?

I like that one 'cause it has most Toyota transmissions and several transfer case options already in pull-down menus.

265/75 16 gets me bang on the little radar signs along the hiway 4.11 diffs and put in an earlier h55 and non vac transfer I'm assuming the gear in the transfer case is different. I was 10% out before the gearbox swap.

yes...current bellhousing works if its the OEM one for the 4speed. I think they are marked "3f" on the top??? Talking about the OEM 5 speed for the land cruiser.... I have one in my truck. The OD is not that great, but better than stock 4speed, I don't think the 2f can handle too much of an OD...depending on gearing and tires.

4.11 seem to be more commonly available since it was a stock cruiser gear ratio. Since I’m a cheapskate I may go that route...let me know when you want to upgrade!

I actually regret swapping the 4.11s in. The 3B is less happy than a 2F at high RPM, so I feel like it was happier at highway speeds with a little more overdrive. I guess I just need larger tires now.

HA!! I believe it. i read people’s posts that they’ve swapped in 4.88’s and i can’t help but think that poor truck is screaming down the highway at redline!!

I have an FJ62 with an H55 and 4.10 gearing on 33 inch tires. The gear sets are out of 2 different 80 series rears so the 4.10 is correct.

4.11 = 37 x 9
4.10 = 41 x 10

As has been said, Highway is about 2500 RPM in 5th gear at 65 mph. It's a nearly perfect set up for the torque curve of the 3FE. My speedo is very close to accurate.
