Hey All,

I've been working through all the issues on my recently purchased 80, and the last big one is the exhaust. It is rusted to hell land has more leaks than I care to try and find. It seems that aftermarket exhaust aren't that common and that CA legal exhausts for a 93 are even less so. Does anyone know of a off the shelf option that replaces fromm the manifolds back? Do I have to custom?

I had a local muffler shop to make a new setup using 2.5" pipe after cats. Everything is welded. I supplied CA legal magna flow cats.

Hi Atwalz,

Thanks for the comment. Do you remember what the cost was so I can budget accordingly?

I recall paying around $900 for work which excludes the cost of cats I supplied. That cost includes a Magna muffler.

Just for clarification, anything after the cats you can do what you want. Only cats and forward do you have to worry about CA approval.

How are those magnafow cats doing? Did you go with a better sounding muffler? I'm considering an exhaust upgrade.

As of now, magna flow cats is moot question. They did fine till motor ran. My rig is in a shop getting ls3 erod cruise and connect.

Are you in CA? I thought CARB was not going to issue any new stickers for V8 converted 80 Series. Both @NLXTACY and Jonathan Ward at TLC in Los Angeles have made the same comment. Please advise.

Mine is 1994. Erod is good in my scenario.

This was my understanding as well the California wasn't issuing tags.

Maybe it's a 25 year thing?

My next project is refreshing the entire exhaust system on my 1997 from headers back.

In case anyone's interested, OEM is ~$3500 shipped or local pick-up with LA sales tax.

I've been looking at different exhaust options, I keep coming back to the OEM, it just works

At 6:18 Jonathan Ward discusses the V8 conversion situation in CA. I'd be curious to hear other perspectives/experiences of late.

Hi Atwalz,

Thanks for the comment. Do you remember what the cost was so I can budget accordingly?
The costs have gone up a bit recently. The Magnaflow CA legal Y-pipe + single cat is now listed at $1000 and the CA legal second cat is $550. I recently had my catalytic converters stolen and installed the non-CA legal Y-pipe with single cat. That part costs about $650. I had to pay a bit more to have the manifolds removed and drilled (old studs broke) and replaced all of the manifold studs while I was there. By the time I paid for the pipe to be welded to the existing exhaust and bought all of the other little parts, I was probably right around $1000 for the whole job. So, add another ~$900 if you have to keep it all CA legal.

With the recent rise in Magnaflow parts on top of the already higher price for the CA-legal ones, you're getting really close to OEM prices. I see the OEM Y-pipe + cat is $1500 and the second cat is $528 from McGeorge Toyota.

And finally all of this is for the later FJZ80 that had the inline cats. I am not sure how much it differs since yours probably has the side by side cats.
