were I in your position, I'd snag the 2F, and horde it in a shed or garage, slowly rebuilding it on a budget, and keep it around until you absolutely have to replace the F.

F VS 2f

Thanks - think I may try and find a asian carb to replace the holley and upgrade the old points distributor to digital... Maybe the asian carb would perform better on some extreme angles - does anyone have some experience to share in that area?

what holley?

Years ago I ran a holley 450 4barrel on a offenhouser intake on 55 with a F motor in it and it sucked ***.. went back to an stock intake and a Asian carb and it was a great improvement...

the problem with the Holleys is they're better street carbs than offroad carbs. All carburetors aren't great off-camber, but some seem to do better, some worse. Holley has a tendency to reflect the latter.

Holley can work excellent at angles if you do the proper tweaks..

But it does take work.

Not afraid of work and if I new how to approach - I would tweak without hesitation. Can you recommend some publication explaining holley tweaking for this specific application?

Just found some good details regarding holley 2 barrel set up for off camber and pitch. Going to give it a try and see how the 'ol six likes it.

Good luck with that, and keep us posted, I'm interested in learning what you have to do!

Francesco, any news?

So far the 2 barrel Holley works like a CHAMP! The 1st test was a steep grade rock crawl - up, over, and down both ways. Before working the carb, in the same spot the Holley flooded and killed the motor having to restart 3 times one way - making an uncomfortable climb that took much effort having to work the three pedals - heel/toe. Now the Cruiser just crawled up and over, never touching the clutch - purring with zero hesitation, no stumble, and no loss of power! Though the terrain was uneven, rough, and jagged it was a cake walk. Along with the properly prepared Holley the FJ40 has 4" Rock Springs with Shackle reversal, Saginaw with High steer, Power brakes, Front discs, ARBs, 35" on 8x15, 4:1 Orion linked to the 3 speed, and Skid plate. Driving on the street the F motor runs very smooth. Bottom-line, have no fear - working on the Holley was extremely easy!!!

Cool, thanks for the update.

Any pics of this rig? It sounds awesome!

I'd be glad to post pictures soon as I can get around to figuring it out... Perhaps some pictures after the FJ Rally on Labor Day weekend!
