I bought my '89 FJ62 with 234K on it and it had been sitting outside driven 2x/year and recently neglected. It had been loved most of its life. I put a muffler/battery/radiator/hoses/belts on it, resealed the oil pan and front axle, did all the usual maintenance tasks, and have driven it 25K in 5 years with zero breakdowns or engine/EFI/transmission issues. Rock solid. Currently has 257K on it, and I would take it anywhere.
I do all my own work, and I shudder to think what I would have to have paid a shop to do the work I did, however - it would surely have been $10K, but that's what you get with a 30 year old, high-mileage vehicle that has sat and needs a lot of catch-up maintenance. You should expect this.
