Hey guys,

We're heading west on I-70 to Moab and we're about 85 miles east of Hays, KS right now. The LX is burning about 2 quarts of oil every 200 miles, so I need to find a reputable shop to do a compression and leakdown test somewhere close to I 70 on our way out to Moab. We're not blowing any smoke, but the radiator overflow reservoir is black. We're not overheating and oil pressure all looks good. Anybody have any shop recommendations or things we can check for? Thanks for the help,

Chris

If you make it to Denver, Comprehensive Car Care on W Evans Ave just replaced my headgasket and I am very happy with their work.

Is that close to I-70? Considered in Denver or one of the suburbs? How much did it cost to have them do the headgasket?

Chris

Within 10 miles or so of I-70. It's in Denver itself. $1543. They used a boroscope to confirm my bad headgasket. Phone number is (303) 722-0888

Ravencr - I PMed you and also, post on Rising Sun, the local club. Lots of LC support in this area. This might be the best place to break down in the country.

We stopped in hays to grab a bite to eat, and there happens to be a Toyota dealership right here, so I think we'll stay here and have them do a leakdown and compression test tomorrow first thing.

Chris

Dang Chris, hope everything works out, keep us posted.

HOLY CRAP! This is exactly what my 94 is doing... 1 quart per 100 miles... not a significant amount of smoke coming out either...
If it's any consolation... jsut stock up on oil.... I've taken road trips with it like this and add oil literally between and at every gas stop...
I'd love to know the diagnosis...
Good luck Chris.

This 94 truck that I have used to only burn about 1 or 2 quarts of oil between changes and then one day just started doing this... It's now been a year and even changed the HG during that year...

Whoa.

Eric, jeez.

Did you post up threads on this and I missed it?

Oil cooler has been ruled out?

Curtis

Yeah I'm at a loss too. I don't have time for a rebuild or hg on the way out if it ends up to be something like that. On the way back it wouldn't be a problem though. But, Eric, you're saying yours still does it after replacing your hg, huh? I'm going to have them do a leakdown and compression test, replace the pcv valve and tube, and hopefully it fixes it and they find nothing wrong. This last tank of gas I put some sort of oil treatment and diesel 15w40 rotella in it and surprisingly it didn't appear to lose any oil this last 200 miles. But, I figure since the Toyota place was right here, I'll go ahead and get it checked out in the morning.

Yeah Curtis, I have, and even posted on others who have had similiar issues... I thought (was hoping) it was the oil pump gasket, but it was replaced and nothing changed. oil cooler has NOT been ruled out... tell me more...
It's about to become a trail-only rig though, so no worries for me, but I hope Chris gets it figured out.

Yeah, I've tried all the snake oil out there to no avail... I also use the thickest oil possible, no difference.
Good luck man, I'd love to find the culprit... I just can't imagine that our issue is a worn out engine... it's got to be something that is correctible.... what's the oil cooler thing Curtis is talking about though?

Lol...i suppose Brett was right about mine sooner than I expected. I can see a trailer queen in my near future too. :) Eric, have you done a ld and comp test on yours?

Chris

Robby's also in that neighborhood and I believe he's mobile. He's probably done more HGs than the next five shops behind him. Great place to break down once you're in CO...

I'm not sure on the oil cooler problem. Is your coolant clean or nasty looking? My coolant looks like crap...very dark colored with crap floating in it.

Didnt want to call him this late, so I texted him with no response tonight. I'll call him in the morning. Paul gave me his contact info...

Chris

Yeah Chris, People have literally flown Robbie around to do HG's...
My coolant looks fine now that I've redone my HG
