My Australian RJ70 Bundera project

Hi guys,

new to this forum but have been around for a while. have just brought myself a 91XXX km bundera. its a fantastic rig, but totally standard, was in some guys shed for years.

drives great, however iam learning heaps as i go along as i would like to do as much as i can myself.

anyways, my first question will i be able to fit any 70 series bullbar or will i need a bundera specific bar?

Forgot to add i want to add a snorkel to my rig, its a petrol 22r. Ive noticed there are a few things in the way so would like to know how you guys have got around this and what you have done.

to my knowledge there isnt an off the shelf snorkel for a petrol bundera. pics and info would be great

It belongs to the light-duty family of Landcruisers, so Hilux/Prado diffs, box, t'fer, engine with a Landcruiser body on top. It is with this knowledge I'd begin searching for your parts. Overseas they called them the Landcruiser II [I think]. You might be able to find a Bundy specific snorkel or perhaps an LJ78 one wouldfit as the front end seems similar.

Quick question - why do you want one? You'll need to do some work to that carb-and-dizzy 22R to make it waterproof.

I had one with similar mileage - it was a great little truck. Now I have coil envy. Got pics? You won't get nowhere without pics. :D

Oh and welcome :D

Thanks mate, ive just gave it a massive clean so will chuck some pics up shortly came up pritty well i reckon!!!

went with it because it was too good to pass up, diesel would of been perfect but beggers cant be choosers in aus! it will be my daily whilst i park up my HSV. Looking to mod it to make it very capable whilst still being easy to drive. Plans at this stage include 2 inch lift, 33 mud tyres, bull bar with lights, roof rack with lights, lockers and anything else i think of.

have read a few threads on other forums in regards to water proofing. i think ill be able to make it fairly capable using a bit of preventative maiteance, shutting off the fan when water crossing and chucking a tarp over the front. however i do know that i will never be able to make it totally water proof

is it the round early headlight model, or the later square headlight model?

body wise, these are common in Ireland and England. here theyre known as Prados. usually they have a diesel engine though (2L or 1kz). I reckon yours is the short wheelbase?

short wheelbase are designated 70 (LJ70,KZJ70,RJ70)
long wheelbase are designated 78

i think for engine advice you should be looking at American 4runner forums, and european forums regarding body and suspension. I'm thinking your in Oz?

this is a great UK forum

in my own opinion youll be able to fit any 70 series bullbar. one from a heavy duty model might require a small bit of modification, but the chassis is the same on the light duty, just a few inches shorter at the front.

below is a site with loads of parts for your car at realistic prices. Im guessing yours is an RJ70, if im wrong you can navigate that site, they cover nearly all LC models

Dont the Bunderas have a different rear shock setup to the Prados/Landcruiser IIs?
Ive never tryed but have read you can get the heavy duty cruiser bars to fit. I made a heavy duty cruiser snorkel fit my cruiser. Was a cheap Chinese? ripoff but at 1/3rd the cost of a TJM etc was worth the effort. Just had to cut the outlet pipe from the plastic snorkel and plastic weld it back in further back as the Light Duty engine bay is shorter than H/D, your petrol airbox may be on the other side though.

Thanks guys. Its an 86 RJ70 with the rounded headlights.

Im used to my cars, all v8s, usually sipping 17 or 18L per 100kms so im not too fussed with fuel ecconmy haha.

Thanks LJjus, thats a good idea and something i will look into. Thanks Redd might just try to pick up a cheap 70s bar from the wreckers and see how it fits up.

I think the first job on my list will be to fit power steering. So far i have found that an 80 series powersteering box will fit straight up. However i still need to fit the resiviour and lines etc etc. Does anyone have pics of an RJ70 with power steering fitted up so i can see where the factory mountings are i would like to make it as easy as possible.

stick with the gasser, if i was going light duty again that is all i would shop for.
i retro fitted a HD 70 series snorkel to a diesel LD unit in the past, no biggie and it fits well.
the frame horns are very similar to the HD version and most bumper fit. i would give it a test before dropping the coin.
congrats on picking up a fun little beastie.

cheers and Welcome.

I HAD A DARKT BLUE METTALIC LJ70 WITH A 2L DIESEL ENGINE.

370.000 KMS ON THE CLOCK AND RUNNED BEUTIFULL LIKE NEW !!

I JUMPED WITH 4 TIRES OFF THE GROUND WITH IT ! AND NO PROBLEM !

THESE ARE STRONG AND NICE CARS ! AND YOU HAVE COIL SUSPENSION WICH IS REALY BETTER OFFROAD THAN LEAFSPRINGS !!:bounce:

CAR IS GONNA GIVE YOU MUCH PLEASURE ! ENJOY !!

If there is no off the shelf snorkel, contact ARB or any other supplier and see if they can hook you up with one from another vehicle that may fit with some mods.
I know one of the companies in australia that sells snorkels will do this for you,but you may need to contact them at head office rather than your local suburban outlet.

You only need to find one with approximately the same windscreen angle

as i stated the HD version fits well onto the LD body, read bolts right up, from the snorkel to the air box is just a flex tube and some mods...

Hi mate, whats the HD version? sorry if a dumb question.

Ive got another sticky one for you guys.

My bundy has the dash H4 push button. Now from reading the book it states when 4wd is not needed it should be in the out position. When my buttion is in the out position the 4WD light is on. When its in the on position, pushed in, the 4WD light is off. Is there something broken? Something to do with the vacume maybe?

Cheers

or wired wrong ...
HD - BJ, HJ, PZJ, HZJ
LD - LJ, KZJ, small gasser

if it has coils on the rear then it is a LD, if it has the smaller rounder front clip it is a LD, if it has the 8" rear diff it is LD.
if it has leafs on the rear then it is HD, if it has a 9.5" rear diff then it is HD, if it has the boxier front end then it is HD.

the snorkels for the 2011? and newer front diff HD will not fit.
the one you want is this one:
http://www.safarisnorkel.com/snorkel/ss75hf/ss75hf.htm
that is the one i used on the LJ78. LJ71, your front clip is the same but you will need to rig the interior section to the airbox.

they also list a SS71HF for your vehicle but not in production yet.

HTHs

Could be the wiring true.

That snorkel is for the wrong side, i need one for the australian passenger side (rhd) or american drivers side (lhd).

thanks though and i will look into something like that. i think it will be easy enough to run some piping to hook it up to the airbox if i can get the correct fitting snorkel for the shape of the vehicle

ummm, that IS the oz unit and the ones i installed on were JDM RHD vehicles...

oh ok, mine has the 22r and the airbox is on the RHD passenger side.

exactly like this one i got from carsales

sadly i have never seen a snorkel for that side of the 70 series ...
