(LONG POST INCOMING
Had this truck for a little bit, but now we are finally getting into the rebuild of ol' Leroy.

I purchased Leroy in the fall of 2018 from Salida, CO. Found it on craigslist for a fair price and decided to take a better look at it because ya know, Colorado desert means no rust. Had to buy it sight unseen, since I wasn't about to fly all the way out for a potentially meh car. Given the low purchase price and no rust, I jumped on it. Title was mailed to me, and the truck was loaded onto a car carrier for the trip east. A couple of weeks later I picked up the car in the Walmart parking lot. Literally not even drivable. It was dark out, didn't know what the shift pattern was, and it would stall going 45 down the highway and buck like a bull ride at the Texas Fair. Somehow made it home and the fun started.

The truck sat for a while. I was excited to jump right into it, but I was busy and didn't feel like working on a car. It sat for about 3 months, then I took it to a shop to get the rear main seal and all the fluids changed (coolant, trans fluid, diff fluid, oil, etc.) At the time, I didn't know how to do anything except change the oil and spark plugs. Now, I could probably fix anything on that car easily. It's been quite an experience. Here a picture of when I first bought it and what the engine bay looked like. I'll try to upload a pic with each step.

The engine was fully original, fully smogged with 258k on the clock. I was planning to do a rebuild anyway so the mileage didn't matter as much as the rust on this car. Honestly, it was just a vacuum leaking mess. Smog lines were old, smog pump was nearly seized, EGR stuck open, you know the deal. Just neglected. I think that it sat for a while before I bought it, and it was cleaned and sold to me.

After it came back from the shop, it sat for a while again. I thought that the shop did okay work. Had them change the fluids, smog pump, etc. Without telling me, they also changed the carb to a Weber 38 (yay!) and then they sold my OEM carb (no!) so now I was stuck with the Weber. That thing was a mess. Whistled like a demon and it didn't seal up to the OE air cleaner properly so I ended up taking care of that later. Here's a pic of trailering it back from the shop because I didn't trust driving any more than 10 miles in this thing.

A few months later, in about November of 2019, I began to really tear into this thing. Bought a Haynes manual (Not very helpful) and started crawling around on MUD. That's where most of the help has come from. I started my desmog process by removing the air rail. Not too hard since it wasn't rusted too bad. Plugged the holes with bolts and called it a day. Took off the stock air cleaner and bought a lil Weber filter. Stuck a little filter on the end of the smog pump and called it a day. Not too bad.

And of course, I got my signature vanity plate

After, I finally tackled the rest of the desmog. Bought an idler and EGR block off from JimC and started my desmog. Also tuned the carb finally and got it running properly, not dead rich.

Also dropped the catalytic converter and replaced with a MAF straight pipe.

(Oops, no pics of the str8 pipe)

And took it on the beach with my brother and his dogs for a shakedown run. 4wd works great, and the brakes were sticking bad so I have to tackle that next.

Please, if you have any comments, concerns, suggestions, please let me know. Just trying to take ol' Leroy back to his childhood days for the lowest amount of money possible. Planning on making this a "Stock Plus" type of build with a mild lift, OE wheels, bigger tires just to make it look stock but with some performance upgrades. I have a whole to-do list that I need to finish and then I'll be happy.

This is where I'm at so far. I'll keep ya mudders updated  👍

Thanks all,
Mike

Nice work Mike. A lot of fun stuff ahead as you continue baseline this 60. What part of the outer banks are you on? My family and my wife’s family all came out of Smithfield and the Rocky Mount area. We’ve spent many summer vacations at Ocracoke. Beautiful part of the country. Look forward to following your progress. Jimmy

Just a heads up:

that fountain behind you isn't actually the fountain of youth ;)

Nice work on this truck, and good luck going forward.

I've got Smithfield family too, going way back.

The Outer Banks are a real natural wonder, please keep the pics coming!

Update:

Not enough time for brakes lately, but I redid my naaaasty mud flaps. Little bit of steel wool and a paint pen did the job. Also sanded and painted the brackets.

How do I get the silver "builds" tag on this thread? Do I need a moderator?

when you start the thread there is a box to choose a heading from iirc.

Ijust tried on mobile but didn’t see it. I’ll check on my pc in the am if no one else pipes in.

*EDIT* yeah must be a mod thing now. I don't see the tags I was thinking of.....like in the classifieds section.

lovin it!!!

Thanks! How's that Sniper working out for you? Debating whether to do a desmog OEM carb or grab a Sniper while I can
Amazing!!! You wont regret it.....

Alright y'all, here's a build update!

Been tuning it up and getting it "up to speed" (no pun intended) and got a new part or two.

New set of FJ62 Mirrors. These are OEM and brand new still in box. Got them from partslane on Ebay and they shipped from Dubai. They look fantastic

1605313224902.png

They are a massive improvement over the dangerous stock mirrors. The passenger side mirror is convex, allowing for a larger FOV.

Also tightened the manifold bolts and got rid of that pesky vacuum leak. Obviously went out for a drive and "tested it out" :)

Good news: after a few tanks of gas, the gas gauge reads dead accurate!!

1605313345661.png

Rebuilt the brakes (sorry no picture of the new brakes) New drums, shoes, hardware, cylinders, etc.
For the front, I left the rotors, but replaced stuff with cardone calipers, bosch pads and centric lines. Pedal feels much better, but I still have a tad bit of air in the rears.

Gonna take another crack at writing something interesting. Hopefully I seem a little bit more interesting...

I was originally going to drive Leroy up to Bealeton, where Ryan's shop is located. However, I just don't quite trust Leroy yet to make that trek without a support vehicle. Also, the tires are old and dry rotted, and it just won't hit the speed limit easily without really wringing the guts out of the old tired 2F. So, I've opted for the tow dolly strategy. 2 wheels on, 2 wheels off. Luckily, the nicer tires are in the back of the car, so that helps bring my blood pressure down. Here's a pic
1606257601610.png

The Sprinter barely has enough towing capacity to pull it, but I figured I would just go slow. I wish I hadn't sold my 6.7L F350 so soon! It would have been perfect for towing this! Either way, hopefully this goes smooth enough. Driveshaft is disconnected, sitting in the trunk.

Is there anything else I need to worry about? or is the driveshaft the only thing I need to disconnect.

Anyways, thats all

-Mike

I think you're good with a driveshaft disconnected (remove it completely so that it doesn't fall off and be sure the parking brake is not engaged). I always stop and check the tow dolly straps 3x before I believe that they are actually tight. I seem to have a vehicle-ejecting tow dolly, so I'm paranoid about the straps.
