Some body mounts I didnt realise I was missing turned up today.. so the assembly of the front clip can now (almost) proceed. Just got to get some colour on the radiator mount and inside of the front guards. A quick test run of the engine to make sure something hasnt gone terribly wrong with the spigot bearing, thrust bearing, or clutch and then onwards to a radiator install.

If you're in Australia and are after 60 series parts.. Leon Catlin offers awesome service, he had the mounts in stock and had them in the post 2 hrs after I made contact with him.. L.C. 4x4 Parts / Car Parts - https://www.facebook.com/lc4x4parts

soo shiny!! bubble wrap too

A year passed, and I finally located an HJ60 chassis that was quite close to where I lived.

Of great importance was that it was "registerable" in my state (South Australia). The seller had the number plates, identity plate from the cab and the original engine number - this GREATLY eases the re-registration of the vehicle to put it on the road - it can all be done online.

Wonder the difference of registering in S.A. compared to Vic. I am hoping to avoid having to go to a VASS engineer. Never heard of it being done online. I believe N.S.W. is the most difficult, rwc every year.

South Australia's rego system is really cool.. no annual inspections, no inspections on change of ownership. When rego renewal comes around you can choose not to register and pick it up YEARS later with zero issue.

They have just wound back the online registration of unregistered vehicles that you dont already own but its a simple form to fill in and 10mins at the local rego place and its done - as long as you have the VIN, Plate and Engine Number anyone can register an unregistered vehicle without having to prove ownership

The historic registration scheme is very generous as well.. Any vehicle 25yo+, $90 for 90days driving per year.

our club reg is similar, I have an old merc on $100 for 100 days.

But your general reg is way better. But then thankful in vic. once done once, you don't have to do it every year like NSW.

Nice.. diesel?
no unfortunately, 1984 230e, but lots of parts interchangeable on the w123 300d. When my Dad died, my brother took no interest so I look after her. Heavy and well made. 6 million were made for the U.S., Africa to the mid east.

Sometimes it is nice to get about in a smooth lounge with electric sunroof. Always worried where you park it, scratches, hub caps and merc emblem.

But merc is no way as nice to work on as toyota, chalk n cheese. Have to lift the engine to change starter, jack her up for fuel filter, unusual tools..I found the lc steer gear much more approachable than the merc personally.
I'd choose toyota hands down for working on.

These decals are very hard work to get off.. and the adhesive is resistant to pretty much everything :(

Preheat with a hot air gun then the caramel wheel.. all done now, but the remaining adhesive is proving very stubborn.

I run a Stop Cable on my HJ47... but if the Fuel Control Relay and this motor work "out of the box".. I'll run it until it doesnt work anymore :)
Awesome work!!! Can you share a pic of the stop cable set up on your hj47. Need to do similar. Thanks!!

Inner guards and radiator support all painted up and cleared today..

I hope to have the radiator support and guards mounted during the week, there's a coupe of issues to address with one of the guards but I need it on the vehicle to do that.. (a small dent and I need to see it with the bonnet in place to get the best outcome on the repair.

If you have to go down the VASS path I've just been through the process with my supercharged 60, fiick me a PM and happy to share details. He was very helpful and willing to find solutions not bring up problems.

Engine bay is beginning to look like an engine bay.. and the height of the 3" lift kit I install is starting to become apparent to me..

I am beginning to conclude that SA ends up getting a few cars from NSW and Vic. It becomes too expensive and difficult to re-register them.
The VASS certificate here in vic. is my sort of nightmare. Lots of paperwork, receipts, meetings, tests and money..in vic. your build to register would be considered a frakenstein rebirth, very expensive. (no offence, little jealous!) :shame:
