I just started to build a rear bumper but i need some help and information on where i need to place the spindles for the swing out and also where I need to source the various parts that I need to complete the project.

here are some pictures of the bumper that I have started....need to source some parts. where do i source the spindles, latches, and other various bumper parts?

where did you guys mount the support for the side wings? Also, how do you weld on the spindle to the actual bumper itself? Is the top 3/16" plate enough or do I need to support it with a 3/16" tube in the middle of the spindle?

Used an IPOR spindle on mine with a Destaco latch and a Grainger safety pin. All works well ad is cost effective.

How did you gentleman make the actual mount for the tire? how does the construction look like? Can you guys give me any ideas on something simple and effective? I am not a professional fabricator...this is my first time welding and cutting!

I recently installed a Sean Houston bumper--I didn't make my own, but I can say that the wings came with pieces that bolted to the frame. There are some hole on both sides and the bottom of the frame rails that they can bolt to (on the right side, it is where the exhaust resonator support bracket mounts.)

As far as the support for the spindle, if its carrying any weight (like a spare) I wouldn't trust it to a single piece of 3/16. I'd want a second piece at least two or three inches below the upper piece.

would it be too much to ask for some pictures of the actual mountings and maybe how the tire mount is rigged up?

I don't know how useful pics of the hinge are, but here are some pics of the bumper on my truck, and a couple have a view of the hinge:

As far as wing support, the install instructions on the Slee bumper give a good look. Basically you have two separate brackets that bolt to the frame first, then those brackets bolt to wings of the bumper:

Look at steps 2, 3, 4 and 9 and the associated pictures.

Good luck on your bumper build. Some good info in the links. I pulled all the plastic bits off mine last weekend and the two outer support brackets were rotted out such they would have to be replaced. So now I'm thinking of building one as well, but first I'll need to finish the front:frown:

Here's a link I saved from years ago on a homemade build

and some more a after a quick Internet search...

I was also looking into this German made (Rockinger/ Jost) Varioblock quick change trailer hitch system with the hope of doing away with my heavy and rusted out Curt trailer hitch. It's very costly and I'm not sure of availability in NA.

If you really want to build a bumper I would suggest buying the 4x4 labs kit, after having mine fabbed I would say it's worth the price no matter how you look at it. With hardware, latches, spindle, and steel I was close to $500 in materials alone and that doesn't include time to source everything.

Dude, seriously? Do you not see he is already half way done with the fabrication? :bang:

do you guys think the wings are strong enough or do i need more support?

If it were me, I'd cap the top of the wings with at least some 1/8" to give them some lateral strength. Outside of that, I think it looks stout.

On your spindle question, you definitely need to have two points of contact on the spindle. Keep in mind that this think will be subjected to a lot of shearing force, and it needs reinforcement.

almost done!

finally started to put the finishing touches on the bumper!

i weighed the bumper and it weighs 187 lbs....is this normal? no spare tire or gas cans.

A said above, the spindle shaft needs to points of (one at the top and one below) with some bracing gussets for additional support. There is a lot of cantilevered weight on the spindle once a tyre is mounted and bouncing around. This is my rear bar build thread where the spindle install is detailed in post #4
https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/591744-custom-rear-bumper-wheel-carrier.html

On a side note; I note with interest there are many build threads here where the owners use really thick walled sections of steel to make their bar work that just really isn't necessary. There are many benefits to using lighter gauge steel with well thought out bracing in critical areas. The weight savings are huge and gas mileage is minimally impacted. You also minimise personal risk of injury moving it around during construction and minimise and negative effects on vehicle handling. The little things always add up to big saving. My rear bar weighs 50kg with wheel carrier and 90kg with a 35in tyre, and it cops a beating.

Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to seeing it finished.
