Ever since I sold my '02 LX I've been mourning the loss. Then I found satsifaction with an '04 LS430 but still wanted a truck to relieve the urge for a vehicle that gives that whiff of 'I could take this anywhere'. I remember reading, somewhere on these here forums, some guy saying 'we think our truck's got looks, when everyone else thinks it's a frumpy soccermom SUV'. Pretty accurate - but I still think they're dang good lookin.

Anyway I found a VVTI truck after 3-4 months of searching. Had to fly clear across the state to get it, and the story was the guy bought it (sight unseen from a dealer) for his wife but she had been spoiled by all the tech in an X5 and wasn't interested. Turns out he had had an LX before, too. Two-owner Texas truck before the guy bought it, and he hadn't yet registered it in California, so officially I'm the third owner, and he had rear brakes and timing belt done on it in the two months that he owned it. Great service record, pieced together from the Lexus website and carfax.

The only problem I could see from afar was the awful gold package decals. I bought a rubber wheel before I bought the truck. Found out when I got there that there was an RMS leak, and the AHC felt rock hard. By then I was committed and I drove it tag-less to my folks place in the high desert.

That interior is amazing. Can you please share other pics of it? My leather is due for replacement and I'd love to do something like that. Looks like it kinda matches the wood. I never would have tried that, but I think that looks killer.

Couple photos the seller had taken:

The material is not the greatest, some kinda supersoft synthetic stuff, getting kinda wrinkly in the front, but otherwise seems to be holding up well.

First order of business after driving 9 hours was fixing the seat. The seat sucks, guys. I remember this from my '02. And I know I'm not crazy cause I already searched this site and there's a buncha people who have the exact same complaints: too high, not deep enough, no thigh support, lumbar sucks. So I cut out a harbor freight princess pad in the same shape as the front floormat, and stuck it under the floormat with double sided tape. Instant 1/2" increase in floor height relative to seat bottom. Then I ordered this on Amazon and not only was it easy to set up, but it does not shift a bit and is infinitely adjustable. Looks ugly but I don't care.

20230322_185100.jpg

Speaking of ugly but don't care - for those with worn out/dirty seatbelt retraction problems - I tried washing the seatbelt in detergent, which softened it up but really didn't help much with retraction. Luckily I learned about Tesa tape from I think the @2001LC thread where he fixed all his rattles and noises (come do mine please) - if you put a strip of Tesa tape in the slot that the seatbelt goes through, it immediately becomes so low-friction that zzzzzzip your seatbelt will go right back in. Will take a picture of this later.

Edit: putting in carfax history for easy searching

Alright, other things I've done:

-AHC flush - this brought back the plushness but also brought back the body roll, so now I have a new rear sway bar and bushings/end links sitting in the garage for an install.
-Headlight restoration kit, new highs lows and reverse lights, with some guidance from Daniel Stern
-new cabin filters
-new rear wiper
-USA spec bluetooth w/ aux
-Opened up the rear trim, refoamed subwoofer, dynamatted wheel wells/cargo area
-Same with front doors, refoam, dynamat - * I THINK all that dynamat in the rear actually made the cabin a little more boomy over sharp bumps. Guess it makes sense. So I'm not going to do the rear doors. Cabin is super-quiet on the highway, just noisy over bumps and that's not due to lack of insulation.

20230308_115730.jpg

-Might never use them, but got new elastic bands from Michaels and replaced the stretched out ones in the storage bins:
20230311_141459.jpg

20230311_200921.jpg

-Oh yeah the steering wheel was off-center, and in the process of doing the VGRS fix, I noticed that the steering angle was some crazy high number. So when the system uncoupled the steering wheel from the steering rack, I figured why not try to 'unwind' the wheel to get the steering angle down. ... Turn turn turn turn scraping noise scraping noise *snap* ...And that's when I learned what a clockspring is and how the buttons on the steering wheel keep working when you turny turny.

Problems I have:
-RMS leak
-valve cover leak fixed
-quirky AHC problem where everything functions but the truck never comes up to the zeroed height, always half an inch short - tried to replace a sensor but it didn't do much, @IndroCruise has ordered me to do some electrical investigation which I'm currently putting off problem fixed by simply including the amount the sensors read to the standard height
-need cheap sliders cause it looks better without the running boards but I still need steps cause my kids are little and also I won't do any real wheeling
-power steering reservoir hose leak

Things I need to do:
-figure out how the hell do you get to the inner line of valve cover bolts to snug them up
-clean out power steering reservoir/replace hoses, flush
-heater Ts (have a new pack sitting around from my LAST LX from 4 years ago!) + replace one of the hoses which has screw clamp on it (waiting to accumulate enough parts to get free shipping from McGeorge)
-coolant flush
-new fuel filter
-install LC rear sway bar
-grease driveshaft
-shin-etsu everything
-get another key made

Eventual things I need to do:
-steering rack bushings
-front sway bar bushings
-spark plugs... maybe at the same time as valve cover gasket?
-engine mounts... maybe at the same time as RMS?
-flush all the transmissiony parts? I think there's like three different things under the truck that need fluid?

NVH rehabilitation, hopefully:
-front LCA?
-body mounts
-engine mounts
-tranny mounts

Nice work on the straps! I am going to copy that.

And I would have bought your gold package from you. Or swapped emblems…

I thought someone might want to swap, but it included the hubcaps AND the bit of metal around the antenna.. Oh and when I scrubbed the hubcaps I found out that one of them was actually chrome and someone had just carefully painted it to match.

FYI for the straps, you probably do not have to remove the trim; you could just cut out the straps and let the end pieces fall off into the wheel well area. The straps are folded around and stapled to small rectangles of stiff paper. Probably an old credit card cut to size would work just as well. Measure to size and staple both ends, then slip the ends in sideways, done.

Awe man you had EVERY component! Haha. Ive got an ‘07 with the same wheels so we could have direct swapped!

OK OK trolling done. I do have some 06 chrome 5 spokes to install…

Keep up the good work and thanks for the extra detail on the straps!

Here's the tesa tape on the seatbelt hanger:
20230419_174211.jpg

I gawrawntee your seatbelt will retract 300% faster.

And my favorite mod: cleaned up old tire in the cargo area. Won't shift around no matter how fast you take turns, can hold a couple of grocery bags upright, the cavity holds small things which won't get lost, and is about the same height as the rear seats when folded, so it's a perfect shim to carry big/long things level. Can be shifted back a little with an open tailgate to carry 4x8 plywood.

20230419_174943.jpg

QUESTION: what parts wear out the fastest if you're always taking sharp turns too fast?

Awesome, thanks.

That's surprising and impressive that they recovered all seating surfaces in that. On the outer sections of the seat I might prefer a dark taupe to match the upper trim color, but your setup is still much more interesting than the same old beige from the factory. Good score, IMO.

Will take a picture of this later.

looks great - would be amazing with black carpet

Awesome, thanks.

That's surprising and impressive that they recovered all seating surfaces in that. On the outer sections of the seat I might prefer a dark taupe to match the upper trim color, but your setup is still much more interesting than the same old beige from the factory. Good score, IMO.
Yeah as soon as I saw that I thought - someone was taking good care of this thing. Paid a lot for it but I'm minding less and less!

The gold package emblems bring a few bucks on marketplace. I was looking to buy them myself (I like the nostalgia) but they're over $300 for the set which I didn't see worth it.

Whaaaat. Well I'd still have had to pay to get chrome ones..

Please make sure that is properly fastened down. I'd rather have my eggs become projectiles in the event of a collision than an old tire.

I run a Reef drawer on the driver side, with grooved carpet on top that hold dual InstaCrates in place perfectly. This contains things from sliding around, and the drawer is bolted down and the crates secured by a simple strap. The crates then fold down and go into the drawer perfectly when not carrying items.

Why come? I don't think it will be possible for it to exit the cargo area in anything less than a catastrophic rollover...

I do woodworking so I'll build a drawer or platform eventually.

High-five to you 🖐️ I too had a 02 LX, then a 04 LS430, now a 07 white Hundy :D:steer:
Duude. But do you still have the LS? You're not supposed to sell those you know!

If you run into the back of somebody at 30MPH, assuming the tire hits the back of the seat going 15MPH...my basic math tells me that a 60 pound tire will have 12Kn of force behind it after traveling ~1 meter. That's ~2,700lbs of peak impact force. Whoever is sitting in the backseat, or whatever is stored in the old tire will certainly have an interesting ride.

Feels more like 40 lbs, but FINE, I'll loop some straps through it.

Couple photos the seller had taken:

Can you post a link to the thigh extender? Looks decent and I agree - seats lack thigh support big time!
