Well crew - I had the opportunity to pull the trigger on a new OEM short block and have a shop that is open and willing to help put it in so this is happening. It is time to finally call this a build thread.

Getting ready for the full engine rebuild....and nope, still not wanting to add it all up.

This is more money in oem parts than I thought I would spend 10 years, but I did enjoy the research and hunt.

Nice list of parts, troubleshooting, and resolve. I am going through my rebuild right now and have my drivetrain out with my new short block on a stand getting ready to receive all the components. Mine blew a head gasket. New short block wasn’t necessary, but I had it there for my other cruiser so decided to use it and buy another short block later.

What shop is doing the work? Did you open up the box for the short block? When I opened mine up, it was contaminated with foreign debris. Looked like desiccant material had been crushed and exploded throughout my short block. It took me many hours of cleaning and blowing it out but the stuff was everywhere. Hope that isn’t the case for you.

Wow - thanks for the heads up on the dessicant FMC80. No, I have not opened it, the block is with the shop now, will keep an eye out for it. Sorry hear about your head gasket, but excited to hear about your build! Do you have a thread going on it? I agree, I might have been able to get away without a short block, but given the availability it seemed to make sense to hit everything I can while it is all out. I have a local shop doing the work, Aylestock Automotive. They have been a bit backed up, but Peter came with some strong recommendations and I look forward to seeing the work. Will keep the thread posted.

Oh no! Sorry to hear it Oneops, but congrats on the future new block and joy of a new build. Sounds like you traced some of the source of your sound then? I would be curious once torn down if there are any more clues as to what gave out.

Yeah I’ll know more when I get it torn down but it’s a spun rod bearing. Sadly.

While the engine build continues -- time to update this build thread with a number of the other updates.

First up - removed the old degraded aftermarket window tint using a hair dryer:

Rear speaker upgrade to the Pioneers recommended on this site:

I chose to keep the factory grills for the original look

...and while unnecessary, knowing that the original power antenna was broken, my daughter and I spend one Saturday afternoon fully replacing the factory power antenna. While re-threading the wire was a challenge, it was much easier as the dashboard was already off at the time.
