You drove 11 hours to pick up a brush gaurd? How much did that cost in gas alone?

I advertised a WAAG brush guard for months here and it finally sold for $60. And two cents.

x2....When I bought my 80 it had a chrome manik brush guard and chrome tail light covers, I took them off within 25 minutes of signing the title, put them on ebay and got 90 for the brush guard and 30 for the tail light covers. I honestly thought they would bring a little more than that but I was happy to get anything for them.

I got my ARB off mud in the parts for sale section. It needed a little bit of work but I picked it up for free. The thread actually read "FREE ARB 80 series bumper". And it was an hour away from my house. I nearly crapped my pants. Its a non winch, but that doesnt bother me to much since the price was definitely right. I figure on having around $100 in it and that includes having it powder coated.

You said earlier: "I figured if I hit a deer going 60 without one, It will do damage. Regardless of wheather or not the brush guard is on."

Ok, that makes sense.

Now, put the ARB in it's place. Then, when you hit a deer going 60, the only damage done will be to the deer....and possibly some blood on your windshield.

Point being: Why spend $400/500 on a pretty ornament that won't do any good when you hit a deer? You can spend $700/800 on a pretty and functional bumper that is built to withstand a full-on kangaroo hit at 100 km/h while sustaining little to no damage

Mind boggling.
Question. From my understanding, it's the OEM bumper that's the flimsy/weak point, correct? Vs. say a stout ARB front bumper that has a brush guard mounted onto a solid metal front bumper.

So, based on that, has anyone ever looked into re-inforcing the front bumper? I haven't looked into it, but maybe placing a re-inforcement bar behind the front bumper, welded or bolted onto the frame? That way, the bumper still takes the brunt of the impact, and because it's sturdy/re-inforced, it doesn't deform easily, so the brush guard doesn't bend back to easily?

Thoughts?

Heh, depends on what you're deflecting. I re-installed my brush guard because it was the only thing protecting the bumper from the parallel parking by feel types. The "wings" are utterly useless, but the ram bars will work ok for my purpose.

One of the problems with our bumper (and most truck bumpers) is that there is no impact absorption. Cars are required to have 5 mph bumpers (in the US), so their bumpers have springs, cushions, etc... to help minor impacts. Our bumper is simply some thin sheet metal that'll easily bend back on minor impacts.

Back to the question, the edges are the most vulnerable parts of the bumper. It would take a lot of re-inforcement to prevent them from folding back and preventing a brush guard from bending into the truck. AFAIK, aftermarket bumpers suffer the same issue, but they generally don't have the headlight hugging framework that the brush guards do - which is the main problem.

So, brush guards in general are bad news? I have the OEM bumper on there now. Plans and hopes tlo change before long. I presume after reading this thread that ARB doesnt make bumpers with brush guards?

The issue with most of the brush guards is that the tubes that cover the headlights are connected to the ram bars (the two vertical bars on the guard) and not the bumper itself. This gives them quite a bit of flex and they can easily be pushed into the headlights and fenders.

The general consensus is that if you're looking for more front protection you should buy an entirely new bumper instead of something that fits over the existing bumper.

Good thinking. ARBs are totally paintable. They come factory black but you can paint it easy enough to match your kroozer.

So the real issue is the flimsy OEM bumper which allows the headlight hugging area of the guard to bash in the lights/fenders - since they're connected to the main center section of the guard?

My issue is I'm not real fond of the aftermarket bumpers, and I have a nice guard I'd like to use - provided I can make it functional (not a damage multiplier).

so does arb even make brush guard bumpers?

I believe the only bumper type that arb makes for the 80 is the deluxe bull bar with or with out a winch mount. The headlight protection attaches directly to the bumper itself.

The only bar that I see ARB makes that attaches similar to a brush guard is the nudge bar.

Personally, I like the sahara bar they make (single hoop). But I don't see an 80 application.

The ARB had a top portion that acts as a protective cover for your grill and headlight area.

I ripped my OEM bumper off in a parking lot on a pole while looking in the other direction and commenting to my passenger to check out the POS Land Rover, to our left.
