That's pretty much exactly what I was thinking. I like 80Baja's idea too. It would be cool if the sides could be unzipped and removed or rolled up providing just a roof for shade. Does this inspire you to chop the entire roof off??!! That would be truly sick. The perfect amalgamation of FJ40 and FZJ80. I'm just saying.

Way too much money. If I am going to do that I would just cut the whole roof off and make a full top like the jeep I posted. I like all the ideas, but keep in mind that I am poor, and I have a $1500 out of pocket budget that I will not go over as of now. The selling of my OEM parts has funded most of this build. I plan on continuing that trend.

Getting things done at a snails pace. But getting them done none the less:

Finished cleaning up and painting all the inner fender area and under the cowl with a heavy duty gloss black paint. Probably go back at some point and hit the whole thing and the engine compartment with POR-15 or something equivalent. Also got a couple coats fo satin on the hood and cowl. Hood didnt turn out as nice as the rest of the truck since I didnt feel like removing it. I had to hang from the rafters in my garage to get the paint on it. One day I may go back, sand it, and get an even coat on there. But it works for now.

Got the pice cut for the new smooth floor in the rear. Still have to cut some pieces for the exposed corners by the tailgate. But i am working on some ideas, so they can wait. Decided not to do the removable panel right now. It will be pretty easy to cut and add one in the future if I decide to go coilovers. You are looking at the bottom of the panel. I coated it with rubberized undercoating except for the edges that will be welded. I am going to "glue" the interior parts to the cross-members with some sort of industrial glue, since it will be difficult to weld under there. It was all glued from the factory, so I just have to figure out what to use that will work.

Also, welded in the new crossmember for the newly shortened rear section of the floor. Used angle since thats what I had laying around. Shot a coat of paint on it to keep it from rusting as I work.

Got some ideas for what I am going to do to the interior. Going to try an make things a bit more symmetrical. Plan involved cutting out a portion of the wheel wells, so I went ahead and past the point of no return since that always motivates me to get creative, haha. Once I do some more figuring, Ill let you guys know if its going to work. Also, since I lost a small amount of structural integrity with the wheel wells being cut, I went ahead and added two more cross-member supports to the floor (circled in red). This thing might not end up pretty, but it sure as hell will be solid.

Yeah, As of now leaving the roof white is the plan. Saves me some work and should reduce in cab temps a bit in the summer. Mirrors will be painted black though. I want to remove them to paint them, I just havent had time.

Funny you mentioned the .50 Cal. My buddies and i were thinking it would be funny to build some fake turrets out of pvc. Just to see what kind of looks I can get in traffic.

Main section of the new dance floor is in. Its quiet again in my cab. Much easier to slide cargo in and out without it catching on all the ribs, grooves, bolts, and hoo-ha's of the factory floor. With the added support beams, and since its 16 gauge sheet, I think it should be as sturdy as the factory floor. If it turns out to need more support I will either add a top layer of aluminum diamond plate, or add more support beams underneath. Next comes the side panels and wheel well modification. Once its all done it will be line-x'ed.

Well I am in Socal so normally it doesnt rain much. Although this year we have had a lot of rain (for here) ... when it rains, it gets wet. Truck is filthy right now from bondo dust, grinding shrapnel, overspray, and welding goobers. Once I am finished putting the truck back together i am going to gut the interior, powerwash the carpet, and thouroughly clean everything. Ill be line-x'ing or monstalining the cargo area, and the rest of the interior will be hit with POR-15.

Two reasons. MUCH more expensive to do the area inside the cab if i have it spray, and, I did that in my old truck and it was really loud in the cab. Carpet keeps thing much quieter.
