Brought home a 1987 FJ60 today.
It’s been parked since 05’.
Guessing due to a bad smog pump as it was sitting in the rear seat with a few used and new belts. The seller said he got it running if after rebuilding the carb and pouring gas in the bowl. That was a couple years back though. He also installed a new fuel pump but said the line are probably clogged.
My last 85’ I went through something similar.
Being high desert I couldn’t find any rust but the carpet is crispy and the dash is toasty.
Only body damage was from a suspected wind storm wedging the door open onto the the fender. Searching for replacements if anyone knows of any in Silver Metallic (147).
Fwiw, It does have the air box, I removed it to prep for an engine bay wash down.

That driver's seat indicates pristine condition. . . how many miles are on the odometer?

188k. The seat covers helped the seats for sure.

Round one on the engine compartment using a shop vac, air compressor, engine degreaser/brush and water. Next round I’ll try some orange cleaner and maybe a steamer if I feel frisky

@RodrigzCrzr came by today. MMO in the cylinders, turned over the engine, adjusted the carb and boooooom, she’s alive!

Intake manifold has a leak. Think I’ll send out the carb for a rebuild and pull the intake off.
To do list as of now is baseline engine with plugs, wires, cap/rotor, oil change etc. Water pump and thermostat. Flush cooling system. Clean fuel system completely. Send out smog pump for a rebuild.

Pretty stoked though on hearing it fire up. Ac functions, carb cooling fan works, lights and blinkers check out… and even the oem radio!!! Although there’s some funky speaker wiring goin down.

Picture of the smog pump that sidelined this truck in 2005

Pulled the carb this evening to send out for a rebuild. Got another round of cleaning grime done as well. The lil Wagner steamer really helps out.

Although the seam sealer in the rain gutters looks good in your pix, check it all carefully. Texas and other southern-based truck suffer from dried-out seam sealer and ensuing roof rust. That' the LAST place you want rust (well, other than anywhere else...)

Take the Smog Pump to BZ Rebuilders in Canoga Park.

That’s the plan, along with the power steering pump.

Agreed. I recently came across a picture of the cross section of the roof on a Facebook group. The poster also explained how condensation pools on the inside of the roof rails. Made sense with the visual. At minimum I’ll redo the seal up there but I have a feeling a paint job and body work are in the future.

Walked by the cruiser today and it sucked me in so I started pulling some items in anticipation for parts arriving soon.
The oil cooler line that runs into the thermostat housing looks like it’s gunked up. The hard line is deteriorating and a oily/coolant sludge came out of it. Is this a for sure sign of the oil cooler failing?

Parts waiting or on their way to be installed are;
Water pump
T stat
Soft fuel lines
Tanks getting cleaned
Fuel sending unit
Fuel pickup tubes
Spark plugs/wires, cap & rotor
Carb sent out for rebuild
Radiator will be flushed and tested
Timing cover gasket
Oil pan gasket

What else should I add to my “while I’m there” list?

Let the snowball begin!!
Get a FSM if you dont already

I’ll play enabler here

I think you might as well pull the whole drivetrain out and reseal and replace everything, make sure to do the galley plug..... rebuild the t case on the bench, put the whole thing back together and go in on new motor and trans mounts, new u-joints and balance the drive shafts, full TRE kit, leaf spring bushings, shocks, steering stabilizer, send the steering gear out for a rebuild, Knuckle job, new brake soft lines calipers rotors pads drums shoes cylinders hardware

Of course all fluids hoses belts clamps etc etc etc etc etc

Flush the brake lines fuel lines and cooling system really well since it’s been sitting so long.

That 60 looks like a fantastic example to sink some money into

Hehehe yeah the baseline sounded so simple in the beginning.

Printing the fsm out at the local print shop tomorrow. I should have never sold my last 60 with the fsm

The fuel system is back in place for the most part. After examining the oil cooler and other coolant passage ways I opted to pull the head. With the help of @RodrigzCrzr the head came off. Only busted the air rail. Found a replacement through @CruiserTrash
A number of parts are waiting patiently in the garage from City Racer, Cruiser Outfitters and @ToyotaMatt
The head was dropped off today.
