Broken tailgate handle (1 Viewer)

I’ve been restoring my 1970 Pig and opened the tailgate to start installing my recently purchased rear window regulator and the handle decided to snap off. I’ve heard these are unobtainium and was looking for advice on repair. Apparently this cast metal doesn’t weld well and I was wondering if anyone has been successful with some type of “L” bracket repair to reinforce a weak brazed weld. Thanks
