My old starter had been fried, so when I went to place the new one in, I found the bottom bolt hole broken in half. Does any one have any suggestions or am I going to have to replace the bell housing?

I'm thinking, leaving the starter bolted on with only two bolts is not a good idea.
Comments?

I'm getting you don't wanna get a new bell housing , I'd say find a very good fabricator and get it welded up, with proper preparation and the right tools it can be fixed

saying that it looks like its been broken for a fair time, as all your rust prevention is over it you could get away with it for a while, but it was never intended to have two bolts in it

grind it out and run a block mount starter.or just leave it .i dont know the year of your motor but alot of chevies had a brace on the back of the starter that bolted to the block .2 bolts and the brace would last a long time.

Thanks for the replies!

It's a 75 Chevy C-10 350 V8. On the new starter there is a stud on the back end of it and on the engine there are two bolt holes directly above the starter when installed. I tried looking for a bracket at the auto stores, but I was told it would have to be something I would fabricate myself. I will most likely go this route. I just have to figure out what size bolt will go into the hole of the block.

Here is a pic of what I'm working on, this is my first thread on mud.

here is the bracket you need, same one on my C-10 block thats in my 76 (i found it on ebay) Chevy 350 Small Block V8 Starter Bracket: eBay Motors (item 110533427929 end time May-21-10 16:31:10 PDT) and here are stater bolts http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ARP-...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item335ccc2a7a and these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Star...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4cef6fc78b

and by bracket are you talking to mount the starter to the block ? because the starter bolts directly to the block and the bracket i linked to goes on the front of the starter motor housing and bolts to the block as a brace.

and this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1957...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a04ab4dc6 and chevy still sells the brackets too.

Thanks for the links Lone gunman. The angle of the bracket does not look like it is enough. Also the bolts look too long. I already have a starter bolted on the with the two bolts to the bell housing.
Unless, you recommend me returning the starter and getting a block starter. I'm just not sure how and if it will align properly. Based on the first picture is this a toyota bell housing bolted to SBC?

I bought my FJ in Enumclaw WA a year and a half ago when I was stationed in Seattle.

my starter bolts to my block and the bracket (brace) to the side of the block. i have the advance adapters bell housing though and i dont think there is any way to get a toyota bell housing to bolt to a chevy block. you could try and fab the bracket if you want. you can give it a try with a home made bracket it might work fine or may just last for a while i dont know. you should be able to find a block mount one if you want to. its based on how many teeth on the fly wheel 168 tooth or 158 tooth. most i have seen are the older 168 tooth fly wheels. and the bolts i linked are for the block mount starter. i hope this helps and you might check you tube and look for chevy starter install videos, they have them if you search and may show the differance. good luck!

and i wanted to say thanks for your service to our country!
