I was offroading today. I had it in 4HI w/o lockers on. All of the sudden I heard a CRACK and it started grinding like no other. It only did it in gear. The car would not move anymore. I locked the center diff and drove it home fine though. (In 2 wheel drive I assume). I know nothing about these drivetrains. My dad thinks its the transfer case What happened? Can I buy a rebuild kit for this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

I'd guess a front drive flange, but that's a wild guess at that. What you would need to do is drop a drive shaft at a time and see if it is in one of the axles. You might also pull off the front hub caps and check for any visable damage to the flanges such as a crack.

From those symptoms, I would agree with Rick. When the flange let loose, all the torque goes to that axle. With a busted front flange and the center diff unlocked you won't go anywhere. Since you were able to drive home after locking the center diff you were in 4wd with 50% of the torque going to the front and 50% of the torque going to the rear.

A '92 front flange should be inexpensive (give C-Dan a call on Friday) and replacing is a 1 banana job if you get to it before anything else gets messed up.

Does anyone else see the irony here that a '92 with the mighty 3FE engine broke something!!?? :flipoff2:

I am pleased to see it confirmed once more that a CDL is a worthwhile addition to the rig for the later years. May just bring you back from being otherwise stranded. Goody!
