I would suggest you take it to a land cruiser specific shop and have them look at it.

Driving home, started hearing a clank, clank, clank. Sudden looks of power, pulled over, shut the engine off and looked underneath. This part was smoking. What is this part and what have I done? I'm a noob so fo easy ok n me. 1972 FJ40.

So you are saying if it's only lack of oil, I might be able to salvage it?
New exhaust was already in the works till this happened. Any suggestions of routing? Pics? Stay with dual?If you do plan to do offroading, do yourself a favor when you get it running and reroute that exhaust
From experience I’d recommend going to single exhaust. If you are running Ram Horn manifolds that both point down, there’s an off the shelf crossover pipe that will move both to the Left side of the rig. Run it down the inside of the LH frame rail, muffler before the axle, up over the axle and out in front of the Left rear shackle.New exhaust was already in the works till this happened. I’ve got pics of mine in my build thread.
Forgot to mention my 40 has a 350 sbc with a 22 gal aux gas tank making it hard to route the exhaust that way.^^ as bikersmurf said, keep the exhaust inside the frame rails and high. Where it's at will crush closed if you sit down on it
Same here. It may be slightly harder, but still doable.Forgot to mention my 40 has a 350 sbc with a 22 gal aux gas tank making it hard to route the exhaust that way.
Been there, done that.^^ as bikersmurf said, keep the exhaust inside the frame rails and high. Where it's at will crush closed if you sit down on it

inquiring Teq Minds need UPDATE now !when the catastrophe happened I was near my mom's so I had it towed over there. I'm about an hour away, I'll go see it this next weekend. I'll keep y'all posted. Thanks so much for the input.
Talked with a local lc shop today, they want to start at the ebrake before tackling the tcase. Ideas?- could u better describe the smoke to us ?
- what color was it ?
- how much smoke was there actually ?
- what did it smell like ? ( maybe rotten opinions or like plastic burning alot ?
- u have any tech photos of the breakdown whatsoever to post here > < anything relevant is a clue here
- what noises were observed right up to and leading into the breakdown ?
- what if any different noises were heard at time of the break down ?
- also , this is a important thing to recall as is all of the above too , ..................
- DID u feel any vibrations or feel any unusual bumps or felt knocking right before the break down ?
- these are all the Technical Diagnosis questions per the FSM and such i would be asking myself now 24/7 if i were in your shoes
- none are far fetched and i have experienced most if not all in my land cruisers lifetime
- i would also be consulting this UNICORN FSM , if the vibration or noise factor was at play here ,
