im gonna take a @3_puppies WAG here ....... :D

- Your Transfer case DID not blow up , it's fine ........

- still check the oil level , but i dont see any huge leaks ?

- what we have is a failure
to mechanically communicate between your Clutch Disc and the Fly wheel , your smoke was a dead clutch hence the LOSS of power .........

- we can speculate all day , but focus on the obvious first , is there oil leaks ?

- then look for lack of lubrications ,,,,,,,,,

a clutch will DIE suddenly and SMOKE up badly too

that's my WAG ........

So you are saying if it's only lack of oil, I might be able to salvage it?

without more diagnosis, it is hard to say
did you feel the transfer case?
another WAG would be the transfer case has no oil in it as it is all in the transmision.
I've seen it before.
if it was run long enough dry and now is making noise, a rebuild is most likely not an option as there will be chipped teeth and worse.
if it is the transfer case, find a replacement.

again without more info it is just speculation

^^^

I believe this scenario is the most likely.

All the OP needs to do to verify is to remove the drain & fill plugs and check oil levels.

New exhaust was already in the works till this happened. Any suggestions of routing? Pics? Stay with cd see
From experience I’d recommend going to single exhaust. If you are running Ram Horn manifolds that both point down, there’s an off the shelf crossover pipe that will move both to the Left side of the rig. Run it down the inside of the LH frame rail, muffler before the axle, up over the axle and out in front of the Left rear shackle.

I’ve got pics of mine in my build thread.

^^ as bikersmurf said, keep the exhaust inside the frame rails and high. Where it's at will crush closed if you sit down on it
Forgot to mention my 40 has a 350 sbc with a 22 gal aux gas tank making it hard to route the exhaust that way.

Same here. It may be slightly harder, but still doable.

I had to work around: a 22 gal fuel tank, 4 gal air tank, air bags, etc. Tail pipe is routed between all of them. Enough space to make it all happen.

The tightest spot was fitting the crossover pipe between the oil pan, driveshaft, and diff. Factoring in where the diff can move to if not just sitting in the garage.

Been there, done that.

In ‘96 I had a quick and dirty exhaust routed the same way as the OP. Crushed a header pipe and a couple mufflers over the years. I was strapped for cash after doing the SBC conversion, and figured it would only last a few years. 21 years, and about 6 pairs of mufflers later, the header pipes were getting holes in them so I started over and did it right.

I'm with most of the others re lack of gear oil in the transfer. Just because you don't see any leaks - looks pretty dry on the outside in your photo - doesn't mean it has gear oil inside. Remove the drain plug and see if anything comes out. While you're under there take a look at the transmission. Is it covered in stinky sticky messy 90wt? If so you've experienced the notorious leak of gear oil from the transfer into the transmission where it is expelled through the transmission breather(s). My '71 experienced this getting noisier and noisier until it would no longer move under it's own power. Pulled the transfer case (not easy but can be done) and began to take it apart. Dry as a bone inside. I replaced the bearings and the main shaft with an SOR used one as the original was pretty scored. Gears were undamaged. Drove it several more years without problem. This was in the days when the internet had barely been invented and I'd never heard of ih8mud, if it even existed. Years later I heard about the bypass hose that connects the transfer to the transmission and equalizes the oil level in both or at least keeps the transfer from running dry and 3 Cruisers I've owned since all have the bypass.

- could u better describe the smoke to us ?

- what color was it ?

- how much smoke was there actually ?

- what did it smell like ? ( maybe rotten opinions or like plastic burning alot ?

- u have any tech photos of the breakdown whatsoever to post here > < anything relevant is a clue here

- what noises were observed right up to and leading into the breakdown ?

- what if any different noises were heard at time of the break down ?

- also , this is a important thing to recall as is all of the above too , ..................

- DID u feel any vibrations or feel any unusual bumps or felt knocking right before the break down ?

- these are all the Technical Diagnosis questions per the FSM and such i would be asking myself now 24/7 if i were in your shoes

- none are far fetched and i have experienced most if not all in my land cruisers lifetime

- i would also be consulting this UNICORN FSM , if the vibration or noise factor was at play here ,

Talked with a local lc shop today, they want to start at the ebrake before tackling the tcase. Ideas?

that sounds like a very Vague Diagnostic approach ?

the E-BRAKE assy is part of your Transfer-Case assy........

are there any LAND Cruiser or at least a VINTAGE old skool 4WD service and Repairs shop in any practical towing range from your trucks Current location ?

- did they test drive your truck yet in any way ?

- your feedback on my detailed tech. line by line status of events items above would be a better start and won't cost u a dime

- this shop's lets take it apart and see how it works first approach will absolutely hit you in the pocket much harder then you may realize or understand at the moment ...

just saying , those are some real world facts u should consider .........
