I have read that older model 7x series brake parts are the same as 6x series parts.

Is this the same for my 1992 HZJ73 ? (4spd auto, 4 wheel discs)

I'm looking to replace pads and possibly rotors.

Are the front brake parts identical to the rear?

Anyone know the min thickness for rotors?

While we're talkin about brakes....

My E-brake doesn't work all the time.

How can I adjust it ? Do I have to go in from the t-case?

The fronts look the same but Im sure the part# are all different. Same price so just buy the appropriate gear for your year.
Rears are different

They can lose 1mm

Welcome to the club. They are difficult to adjust. You have to loosen the adjusting mechanism off on the hand lever.
Then adjust the little brake shoes inside the rear discs like normal drums.
Then readjust the hand brake lever
You may have to repeat the exercise a few times.
If your lucky it might hold on a windy day

IMO ,the lever doesnt pull enough cable through. Adjusting them more makes them rub all the time.
I partly solved the problem by adding some spacers to the cable at the hand lever end.
I put a new cable and shoes and it was barely acceptable after a 3-4 hours of sweat

Thanks Rocso !!

You said that the rotors can loose 1mm. How thick are they to start with?

I was wrong,it is 2mm. The thickness of a standard front disc is 20 mm and the min is 18mm
Rears are thinner and are 18mm standard and 16mm min

I think the rears are the same as some model 80 series but not the ones sold in N America

Thank You Rosco

All I have to do now is find some parts round here.

Let me rephrase that:

All I have to do now is find the right parts round here

Last time I needed parts it took three times around at two weeks per. Only to find out that the supplier had the right parts the first time. GGRRRRR almost two months for parts.

Hopefully I'll have better luck with the brake parts. I don't think they'll last that long. I think I might re/re the front axles/birfs too....might as well since I'd have to take the same #*@t off anyways!!

Cheers

Take an old pad and an old rotor with you.

I was wondering about using Tacoma or Tundra brakes and rotors front and rear on my HZJ 73. I can re bolt circle them at work easily. Has anyone done this?

The fornt and rear are all differnt, and, thre was a difference in rear brake parts in 1990,91,92, so they might not cross with anything. Download the EPC - it is your friend to find exactly what you need.

When you get the right part number you can either get the parts from ENS or from 4wheel auto in edmonton.

IIRC the pads you can get at toyota - or i might have a set of OEM, and I have a set or rear rotors that are still good - need a resurface. 4Wheel auto sells after market - not as good as OEM.

The rear discs have the little tiny drum inside with the small brake shoes for your e-brake. I'll bet my left nut that the drum is rusted and the shoes are worn down - replace the rotors and you should be ok - then you can adjust the ebrake easily. I've done a bunch of HZJ73's and it is a piece of cake. Just hope you don't have to buy rear calipers:) $$$$

Front rotors are standard Land Cruiser fare. Pads are either LC or the later Hilux pads (they're a little larger).

I have a 1992 HZJ73 out front that I'm about to put up for sale and I'm going to be going through it soon... and will then be able to tell you exactly what it has.

The'92 HZJ73 has a 5 speed, factory lockers, factory winch, flares, lift etc... and all the nice ZX trim package. It's in super nice condition and only 111,00 kms.
