I wrapping up my front axle build, does anyone have pics of how they set up their brake lines with the dust shields removed? I have the 6 shooter knuckles now.

the hose you need is found in the wiki section....it runs from the junction at the top of the knuckle right to the caliper. It makes it nice when you need to change out the birf, because you don't need to crack open the hose to get the caliper off...

i have this old pick
i have since rerouted it a bit
i now have 4x4 labs high steer on my rig.
and cleaned up and rebuilt the knuckles.........:grinpimp:
this is a pic of the long Napa hose in the wiki section

Thanks guys, I have some nice stainless lines I'd like to use, so perhaps I'll make a little L bracket for the stock junction block and bolt it to the removal hole on my trailmart arms. Or perhaps I'll relocate the hard to soft line mounting tab since I need new hard lines anyway. Since I just put the Longfields in hopefully I won't be swapping birfs for a while...

Jay,

Do those hoses fit the factory hard lines? Your line in the pic looks different, maybe because it's new :)

If those hoses fit the factory stuff, what P/N hoses? Are they the same as the wiki: NAPA 38881 (longer) or 38878 (shorter)?

I am going to have to take up your offer to stop by and see your cruiser soon! What are your weekends like?

Steve

Here is how I did mine with my 6 shooters w/ the backing plate eliminators.

I looked up the lines on the NAPA website, it looks like the thread is an M10-1 so I guess anything with the correct flare and a male one side and female the other should work in that size.

Anyone aware of a right angle adapter that could be used on the caliper side to keep it out of harms way?

I had them made down @ Williams Oil Filter in Tacoma($15 a side) and are 12" long w/ 10mm fittings at both ends. I'm not sure what size lines you have, but my calipers were 10mm so I ran w/ it.

So is it recomended to take off the Hard lines from the dust cover so you can actually remove the caliper and set it on the spring when working on the axle?

Sounds good, I like the way you're thinking.

actually I was asking if that is what is done. cause as I was tinkering around with mine with the Knuckle re-built kit about to be done I was trying to figure out how folks are doing that part of the brake lines with out breaking the lines open.
I am guessing that is why when you look at SOR or FRE for parts the front lines are a little longer. guessing that is why they do that. makes sense to me, but I am still learning as I am a NOOB :hmm:

before i changed to the flexible line i used to just bend the metal one
i never cracked opened the system didn't want to reblead the line while on the trail

Prior to 08/80 (09/75-07/80) the brake hose/line junction bracket was bolted to the backing plate instead of being riveted like the later model Land Cruiser backing plates, so one could unbolt the bracket and swing the caliper, line and hose assembly out of the way without opening the system.

:meh:

So I ended up keeping the stock routing, first because I already had the braided lines in the stock length, and second because I really didn't like the idea of the softline coming straight off the caliper. I ended up removing the backing plate from the M-F junction, and fabbed up a couple little L brackets which bolt into the arm removal holes.

For those that may not have a Napa in the area or would rather not support their shinanagan of a shop, Alder auto, Lordco, or Wakefield Sperling in BC carries the shorter line. Napa in Canada does not carry the shorter line nor did they care to help me track down a similar line in length. Part number BH36866 (Raybestos) or BH177101 (can't remember brand name) are almost 13" long and work perfect from caliper to axle. If you want the longer line it is from an FJ/HJ/BJ 60 and is 15" long.

I hope this helps as it was frustrating and time consuming for me to track down the right rubber brake line.
