I had a bit of a situation at the beach today with my 40.
In a nutshell...I was going fishing with some friends and they had a mitsubishi all wheel drive. He decides that it is to soft for him and turns back. I back up to to talk to him and i roll over a loose stump. Apparently it literally tore off my rear passenger brake line. I am 6 miles down the beach and the drive home. I didn't have any brake fluid in my rig only some power steering fluid. I used that to get me home. When I replace the lines I will flush out what is left in the reservoir with regular brake fluid. Is there any problem with this? fluids that is.

Oh yeah, and no fish either...

flush it out ,the power steering fluid will screw up all your seals and you will have no breaks . trust me , there is a big dent in a wall in the shape of a fork lift to prove it .

i know it sounds weird and some one will call bulls*** on this but if you run out of break fluid the best thing to use is water not any other oil .

flushing it out with brake fluid is a good idea .

in a pinch you gotta do what you gotta do. i know a guy that had to fill his up with beer one time to make it home on an old truck.

Thanks guys. Hopefully when I bleed it tomorrow or tuesday it will be soon enough not to trash my seals.

beer huh? I love that!

you should probably be fine if you bleed it out by then, it usually takes a while for the seals to swell up because of the other oil . even so once you get the other oil out they seem to contract back down .

I have used water before in my clutch master to get home about 30 miles, I flushed it out and still had issues later on with pitting inside the slave and master, so I would flush out REALLY GOOD!

fluid

I read that brake fluid absorbs water--one of the reasons it is recommended to change it out

so it seems that if you did use water then changed the fluid, you would probably be wise to change it again shortly after to remove the fluid with the absorbed water

live and learn

yes, we live and learn, right?

I'd probably carry a spare bottle of brake fluid cept I know I'd find it leaked and stripped my paint off!
Not nice stuff!
