I have a 77 BJ40 with 4 wheel drum brakes and no booster. I did a search and didnt find anything about installing one on a vehicle that doesnt have one as factory. Is there a source for this info or does anyone here know what is required for an install? I am tired of standing on the brakes until my leg shakes.

I did this once on a Mini, main thing is getting a compatible master cylinder and servo and then a vacuum source for the servo. You won't get one from the inlet manifold as you would on a Gas engined vehicle, most Toyota Diesels either use a separate vacuum pump (like on the 1HZ/1HD-T engines) or a vacuum pump built into the alternator (like the 2L engines and possibly others.

So really you need to look at the following:

1. Source a Master Cylinder and Servo that will fit on the vehicle - I would suggest one from a later BJ40.
2. Investigate how you would provide vacuum, again look at later BJs with the same engine hopefully. Easiest would probably be the Alternator/Pump combo as it only needs to fit to where the alternator was, the engine driven ones need a place to fit on the engine.

Alternatively I have seen on this board elsewhere about fitting air brakes rather than vacuum servo ones - i.e using a compressor.

if you have drums in all corners .. my first move, are front disk brakes ( or disk in all corners if you can ) after that go with booster. Just my .00002 cents ..

Vaccum pumps are little complicated .. so I thought better option and chance get finding one alternative, coz from Toyota alternators ( B and H engines ) are simple fine ..

aren't awesome vaccum pumps ..

Sounds like a plan

I have a 1972 FJ40 that I swapped a 3B into. The 3B is out of a 1982 BJ60 and came with an alternator mounted vacum pump. I was able to use my original master cylinder and hook the vacum right up to it. It works great.

Have you looked at the LCML archives on birfield.com? I seem to recall that was one frequent subject of discussion a few years ago. Your firewall maybe the newer type that allows a booster to bolt on without having to remove the metal rib. Another issue is whether your alternator has provisions for a vacuum pump or as harveya said, get one that does.

So many interesting cruiser variants in the Toyota world :)
