Greetings!

I have a 90 or 91 year box prado, well a friend does, and it seems as if the clutch has failed. While driving the car stopped...engine runs ,but there's no movement. Clutch pedal appears to work, as in the pedal moves, and with pedal movement the throwout arm in the side of the bell housing moves as well. There is no sound of clutch/flywheel engagement, and not even a twitch of movement with the driveshaft. It is a hydraulic clutch, and we did bleed the clutch line just to be sure that wasn't a problem (not that it should be, as air in the line would make it hard to change gears not stop all movement).

Anyway, any thoughts? Also, any tips on clutch replacement? Unfortunately, as is not uncommon here in Africa, we have no manuals for this vehicle. :(

Thanks!
JM

sure you don't have the t/case in neutral by accident?
not often a clutch fails that dramticly with out warning

Quite sure...that was the first thing I checked actually. We tried both low and high range, and all the gears, 1st - 4th and reverse.

My big fear is a shear pin sheared somewhere that will involve tearing open the transmission.

Further update: We've got the transmission off the vehicle, and the throwout bearing and arm both look OK, as do the splines, and from a brief inspection, the clutch cover.

stick the tranny in any gear and the t/case in low and turn the imput shaft, it should have resistance and the output companion flanges should turn.
there is no "shear pin" in the R151
it will be interesting to see the clutch disc.

was there much in the way of dust and chuncks of clutch disc parts in the bell housing or was it clean?

.

?

I think the R151 in the 78/79 series has a 2 piece shaft somewhere held together with some kind of "pin"
It was the subject of a partially successful upgrade by Toyota a couple of years ago.
Not sure if this applies to the light duty models.

From exploroz
I assume the three piece shaft you refer to is the sleeve arrangement to the transfer that shears off. This has now been replaced by a modified shaft which has the sleeve as part of the shaft. no more problems now. Vehicles after Sept 03 production already have this. If it does go out of warranty Toyota as are most manufacturers are usually pretty good but don't go in all guns blazing or you will just get everyones hackcles up and you are then least likely to get anyone to go out of your way for anyone

More on the clutch..and thanks for the replies, they've been helpful.

Got the disk out...TONS of dust, and several large pieces of clutch pad materiel. I think we have the culprit. I'll get some pictures to post later.

Putting the car in gear, if you spin the spline shaft the rear drive shaft spins...so no further fears of shear pins.

Also I learned today that the 4wd does not work. Not even in low range which surprised me. Wiring in this car is very suspect (as in most of it is in terrible condition). Any thoughts on where to start troubleshooting? Vacuum lines to the controller appear to be in good condition.

They have electric locking hubs I think. Probably not locking when you engage 4wd.
Low range should still engage the front driveshaft so you should not be able to turn the shaft by hand when engaged.

If it has a vac shift on the t/case ,you need to check there is vacuum.
