There's been a lot of talk about dino vs. synth oil and various oil weights. I'd be curious just to get an idea of what each of you actually use in summer/winter?

If you're game, please post the exact brand and weight of oil you use in summer/winter.

I'll start off:
Summer: Mobil Drive-Clean Synthetic Blend 10W-30
Winter: Mobil Drive-Clean Synthetic Blend 5W-30

Also, can someone please post the recommended oil weights for Australian FJ80s in hot/cold climates?

Valvoline All Fleet Plus #388, 15w-40, all the time.

Really cold, Valvoline All Climate #129 , 10w-30.

Whatever Family Toyota puts in it. :p

- Last winter: Mobil-1 15W-50 :p
- Summer: Mobil-1 15W-50 :)
- This winter: Mobil-1 0w-40, if I can find any :-\

Valvoline 10-30 Max Life all the time.

1fzfe motor AU
20w50 oil- -7 deg to 38 plus
15w40 oil -10 deg to 38 plus
10w30 oil -18 to +38 deg
5w30 -30 to 8 deg celcius
all temps are in celcius
Andrew

I used M1 10w30 but will try M1 0w40

Same as Rick 'cept I probably won't experiment with other M1 weights (fell asleep during the recent oil discussions.)

is there a need to flush the engine switching to synthetic?
or is just making sure all the old oils drained enough?

No need to flush, it is an old wifes tale. You could even throw in a couple of quarts of synthetic with your current oil and not have any trouble.

My oil list:

Winter: Mobil 1 0w-30, 5w-30, 0w-40, Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 Castrol Syntec (German Made Red Label) 0w-30, Redline 5w-30, Amsoil 0w-30, Kendall Synthetic 5w-40, Union 76 5w-40 (Mineral Penzoil 5w-30, or Chevron 5w-30)

Summer/All Season if temps aren't below -10F: Mobil 1 0w-40, Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40, Castrol Syntec (German Made Red Label) 0w-30, Redline 10w-30, Amsoil 10w-30, Kendall Synthetic 5w-40, Union 76 5w-40 (Cheaper Sythetic, Shell Synthetic 5w-40).

Hotter than s*** while towing a heavy load with a Supercharger: Mobil 1 0w-40, Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40, Redline 5w-40, 10w-40, Kendall Synthetic 5w-40, Union 76 5w-40 (Cheaper: Shell Synthetic 5w-40)

Change Intervals: Mineral 3000-4000 miles; Synthetics 5000-7500. Factors towards the shorter listed interval: Short trips, especiallly in cold weather; towing; lots of idling; you drive like a homicidal maniac.

Other Notes: Supposedly the Kendall and Union 76 Synthetic are Group IV POA Stocks (the good stuff). 76 Owns Kendall and the two oils are identical except for the bottle.

I don't believe that 50 weight is necessary, even the Austrailian manual says 30 weight is good for 100F temps. The 50 weight will just take power and milage.

If you factor in the cost savings of the longer oil change interval with Synthetic, plus the filter cost, it is the same cost as mineral.

The Castrol Syntec 0w-30 is a heavy 30weight almost a 40weight and it meets europeon A3 & MB 229.3 (which Mobil 1 0w-30 & 5w-30 don't because of their thinness). My only concerns with the Castrol is that it is currently hard to find but getting easier. To identify it look for the 0w-30 with a Red label, and on the back of the bottle it will say "Imported by Castrol USA (Canada), Made in Germany." This is important because the German Made is from Group IV/V stocks rather than the inferior Group III+ stocks that the normal syntec is made from.

Finally, I recommend Mobil 1 overall. The two main reasons: 1) it is about the best oil made and the prices are less than Redline and Amsoil, and 2) You can find it everywhere (think Walmart, Target, any autoparts place)

P.S. If you are still awake, Astroglide rules, just don't run it in your motor. :D

Sure, except for everytime you get the hose wet it will be slippery!!! :D It gives me an idea though, I remember that coolant is supposed to be really slippery . . . .

 you must drive 300,000 miles a year to use all those oils

I guess that depends on what you are doing with the radiator hose. :)

As for oil, I used Castrol 5W-30 for the one oil change I have done in my 97 LC since I bought it in February. For my 96 Tacoma, I've used Castrol 5W-30 since it was new and have changed the oil every 4 - 8K miles (probably average about 5K). It has 160K miles with no problems.

Kinda of the subject , but any opinion on Prolong synthetic additive?? I have seen the info-mercial were they drain the oil, and run it dry??

DON'T DO IT  Really, this stuff is garbage. Think about it, Mobil, Shell, Chevron, 76, Castrol, Valvoline, etc., spend millions of dollars each year to develop oils that meet and exceed specs. All of them strive to make the best products they can. Why would you add in something that these manufactures don't after spending all this money to develop their product.

The general consenses is don't use oil additives. Remeber Slick 50, guess what it did, clogged oil pasages and caused lubercation related oil failures.
