Hmm, hard brakes, very difficult to stop...

MoGas and I have narrowed it down to the Booster or Vacuum diaphram.

Pedal is hard, with a slight, "whoosh" sound when depressed.

    Any ideas?

My Tacoma's brakes are like this. I also get a whoosh. I'm not entirely sure how to check if it's the booster or vacuum diaphram.

I'd like to know a solution as well (even though it's not a cruiser). One of these weekends I'm planning on changing the fluid, resurfacing the rotors, and change the brake lines. I'm hoping this might help.

So the "whoosh" I hear should be the vacuum seal breaking on the new bottle of KY... :'(

Actually what is a slight whoosh? I need to check the Tacoma to see if the sound is similar. I know one thing, with 33 inch tires in the Tacoma and the brakes feeling like they are lacking boost, it's interesting stopping.

I also have brake lines in the front that need to be replaced, you see I tied the sway bar up since it was disconnected and wouldn't you know, it rubbed against the brake lines so now I can see the metal line under the plastic sheathing.

    Thanks Dan, you've got PM.

    Darwood,

You'll know it when you feel it...It takes A LOT of pressure for me to stop at the moment. I'm keeping a good distance between other vehicles and have the lights on. Don't want to test the ARB on a Civic, don't ya know.

    Thanks H,

My brakes aren't great but they aren't that bad. The brake booster does work since I've done a test on that, it just doesn't seem to work enough. I have very little pedal movement when I brake as well. My brakes will not lock up however.

Also how's Flagstaff today? I love that town, I went to NAU for 6 years (with a year hiatus in between) and moved from there a little over a year ago to Northen Cali.

If your engine is idling fine then the diaphram in the booster is ok and it's a valve that is stuck closed that is the problem. The booster is made up of 2 chambers. There is a diaphram in the middle that devides those chambers. When you deprss the pedal the hole in the diaphram is closed and another one at the firewall is opened. Now the front chamber is in a vacuum state while the rear is at atmosphere so it helps pull the pedal down when braking. In your instance, the diaphram is closing but the rear valve is also staying closed so there is vacuum on both sides of the diaphram which holds it in a centered position. I've taken other manufaturers boosters apart, I'd suggest the same to you. They aren't really complicated and you could save yourself some cash.

    Thanks landtank,

I found a used one at Cruiserparts for $150, so I'm just going to swap them out. I'll definitely look at the old one and see if I can fix it for a trail spare, though!

Before you buy the bosster i'd put a gauge on the vacuum lines and check for a leak first, but it does sound like the booster, mine just went out too, real easy swap, also any year booster will work, Brad.

Same thing happened to me a while back.

Got a '96 booster from a junkyard for about $150.
