Ended up getting a good deal on an fj62 front axle. Made an executive decision to harvest the disk brake components to swap onto my 40 housing instead of doing a full 70 series front axle swap.

Had graduation and got out of school at the end of May, now I’ve been able to devote my full time to the 40. Tore down the front drum brakes and prepared for the 62 front disk brake swap. If anyone needs the old drum components let me know, I’ve got everything bagged and tagged.

Had to shave the inside of both axles to accommodate for the slightly larger 60 birfs. Will be using the entire 60 short side assembly and for the long side I will use the long side 40 axle shaft with the 60 birf.

Thanks, make sure you buy the later model 6x series shims when you center the knuckle. It appears they have a wider dimension between knuckle studs than the Fj40. Found that out the hard way upon reassembly and am waiting for parts now.

Dug through the wiring harness today. There were several non-factory taps into the harness for an aftermarket stereo system and trailer harness. Stripped all these wires and reverted back to factory.

Mounted the new rough stuff perches on the 70 series rear axle. First moved the perches inward towards the diff housing. Then made sure they were perpendicular to the pinion flange and tacked and burned them in. My welds are still amateur at best but they will do. Plan to stitch weld 2” on the inside of the perches tmrw just to be safe.

Got the right FJ60 shims to center the knuckle today so I finished up the knuckles on both sides. Got mismatched calipers from Autozone for some reason so I decided to paint them black (yes I covered up the pistons, used naval jelly instead of tape).

Yep dad bought those off of Craigslist, comes in handy for metal shaping.
I enjoyed reading through this. Good work. Our trucks are only 1208 apart.
