I am a first time diesel owner. 1980 HJ45 Troopie. It seems prone to puffing blue smoke when it is cold, but it subsides upon warming up. any info would be greatly appreciated. I realize it is burning oil, I am just trying to understand what the cause is. If it was a gas engine I would say rings, valve guides etc.. The whole glow plugs and injectors and waht have you is greek to me.

I have been holding the key back in the glow position for about 30-45 sec. before starting. Is that sufficent? I don't have a manual so I have been guessing. There appears to be a fast idle choke that I have been using also. How long should I leave that on for?

I know "bloody diesel rookies".

Not a choke, a hand throttle. No choke on a diesel.

The blue smoke may just be unburnt fuel due to a bad glow plug. How rough does it start? How long does it smoke for? 5-10 seconds on start I would consider ok. If it sat and blew smoke for 20 seconds or a few minutes... you then have some kinda problem.

I suggest getting the manual. It is downloadable of birfield.com

You need to check the plugs to ensure they are ok, as per the FSM.

You could also plan on an injector service if you have no idea when they were last done.

You could also do a compression check on the engine. Might be one low cylinder.

30-45 seconds is too long. 20 seconds or less should get it started if all the plugs are working correctly.

10 segs in my 2H it's enought ... but yous make a glow plug search here and you get plenty info to make a test in your glow plugs and know if you need to change ..

"Choke" I don't know what I was thinking, you can see it move the accelerator.

It runs pretty rough for about five seconds then smooths out real nice but continues to smoke blue. It doesn't billow, but it is quite noticable. It will smoke for over a minute sometimes. And sometimes it will continue to smoke as I drive then it will go away when it gets warmed up. The engine runs great other than that. I will search for the glow plug test and look into the injector rebuild and compression test. The mileage is a mystery of course.

I will download that manual too thanks for the tips.

Yah maybe your a little low on compression. Most diesel run a little rough on start up. Five seconds of rough is not abnormal.

In all the 2H's I have seen they all puff abit on start-up I personally wouldn't get overly concerned with it, as you mentioned it clears out, if it were contstanly smoking i.e down the road non stop then yes I would get worried.

They are a very solid old motor and will run forever.

A couple more questions if you guys don't mind. I need to locate an oil filter. Anyone already figured out the crossover numbers so I can just run down to the NAPA or do I need to order one, the oil looks real funky. And I believe it is an H engine the 3.6 liter I posted a picture of it once and thats what I was told. The truck was manufactured May of 1980. How much oil? The old gas cruiser engines used to take a couple gallons or so. I tried to download the manual but the site was down. I will search for some specs.

Thanks for your time.

H engine it's the granpa of my 2H 4.0 Lit 3964 or so cc .. it take 11 q .. aprox are 10.8 exactly if I remember well ..

Thanks again. I figure to keep this thing running as long as I can. every other cruiser my family has had was nothing but trouble until we removed the (what we considered Toyota flaws) engines and the steering and replaced them with GM stuff. Seems to me this diesel could be quite the little work horse and I have high hopes for it. the fact that it is slow doesn't bother me. It doesn't seem to be the low end slug I found the Toyota gas engines to be.
